Biking in Buenos Aires

by vtveen

If anyhow possible we try to make a bike tour during our visits. So we did also during our second stay in Buenos Aires, having seen these bikers before. We decided for the ‘South Buenos Aires Circuit’ organised by a company called ‘La Bicicleta Naranja’ (they offer several guided tours). This guided tour starts from their office in San Telmo at 2.00 pm and it was easy to make a combination with a visit to San Telmo Feria on a Sunday morning. We were cycling in a very pleasant pace through a couple of interesting ‘barrios’ (neighbourhoods). It was not just biking, but also the interesting stories which our guide told about the history of the city. These guy Juán was very patient and wasn’t absolutely not in a hurry. (The website says the tour will last 3 or 4 hours, but we were almost 5 hours on our way through the history of Buenos Aires.) He had to tell his stories and to answer the...

Day 10 - Taking it easy

by TheWanderingCamel

Halfway point in this trip around Argentina, a lovely hotel with great amenities - time to chill out with a late breakfast, a massage and a lazy morning writing potscards and drinking coffee whilst soaking in the view from the sunny balcony before heading off for Puerto Panuelo - Handkerchief Port - starting point for a cruise on Lake Nahuel Huapi to Isla Victoria and Parque Nacional Los Arrayanes.First stopping point is Isla Victoria, largest of all the lake's islands. This was the the site of an exotic species forestry project and still today there are stands of these exotic trees and shrubs to be found growing amid the native Andes cypress and coehue. There are also large populations of introduced deer as well as a newer population of wild boar. A walk across the island with a well-informed and amiable National Park guide takes about 45 minutes, then you have time to make your own way...

Day 20 - Crossing the Andes

by TheWanderingCamel

Crossing the Andes by bus from Argentina to Chile is a fantastic experience. Its a seven hour journey from Mendoza to Santiago. We'd done the trip along the Alta Montana highway as far as Puente del Inca by car just a couple of days earlier, the bus trip took us on to the Los Libertadores pass, the main crossing between Argentina and Chile, and through the Cristo Redentor tunnel that cuts right through the mountain at 3, 170 metres The ascent is quite gentle on this side of the mountains, the scenery stunning all the way as the road passes through the Upsallata Valley, past the gorgeous, multi-hued rock of the Sierra de Upsallata, past the ski resort of Los Penitentes and on to Puente del Inca with its strange sulphur-encrusted rocks and deserted hotel. Aconcagua, the Andes' highest peak, is in view for much of the way. Higher and higher, the scenery more bleakly dramatic now - the...

Salta the Beautiful

by barryg23

Salta is a beautiful town in the north-west of the country and is a good base should you decide to visit this spectacular region. Salta contains lovely colonial architecture, great museums, an impressive cathedral and great restaurants and cafes and you could easily spend a week or two exploring the town. However, Salta's proximity to spectacular natural attractions is for many people the main reason to visit. Jujuy and the spectacular Quebrada de Humahuaca are only a few hours drive to the north, while closer in distance are the mountain towns of Cachi and Molinos in the Calchaquie Valley.

Iguazu Falls

by barryg23

No trip to Argentina (or even to South America) is complete without a visit to Iguazu Falls, one of the continent's most spectacular natural attractions. It's located in a faraway corner of Misiones province, in the north east of the country. The falls are in a national park shared between Brazil and Argentina, and can be visited from either country, though the Argentina side is the better to visit, especially if you're time is limited. The small town of Puerto Iguazu is a good base for visiting the park and has plenty of hotels, restaurants and tourist facilities. The national park is extremely well run, and you get the opportunity to see some fascinating wildlife in the jungle around the national park as well as the main attraction of the numerous falls.

Monumento a los Dos Congresos

by iwys

The massive monument in Plaza de Congreso was completed in 1908. It was designed by two Belgians: the bronze sculptures by sculptor, Jules Lagae and the granite base by architect, D'Huicque. The monument commemorates both the 1813 Assembly and the 1816 Tucuman Congress. The granite steps represent the Andes; the fountain is the Atlantic; sculpture groups represent the Plata, Uruguay and Parana rivers, and the figure on top represents the Republic of Argentina.

Christopher Columbus Monument

by iwys

Commissioned and paid for by Agostino Pedemonte an immigrant from Genoa, the Christopher Columbus Monument was unveiled on December 8th, 1889.Obviously, Christopher Columbus never reached Argentina, but like many of the immigrants who settled here, he was born in Genoa. At one time, so many of the population of the Boca district of Buenos Aires were from Genoa that they even tried to become an independent Genoese republic.

Torre Monumental, Buenos Aires

by iwys

The Torre Monumental, or British Clock Tower, as it was formerly known, was a gift to Buenos Aires from the British community, at the beginning of the twentieth century. It was officially opened in 1916 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Revolution of May. A free elevator ride will take you to the top floor with its views of the port, the station, and much of the city of Buenos Aires. There is also a small Buenos Aires city tourism information centre inside. The tower was renamed the Torre Monumental in response to anti-British feeling after the Falklands War. During a war memorial service, an angry mob attacked it. They destroyed portions of the base and also toppled a statue of George Canning, the first British diplomat to recognize Argentina's independence from Spain. His statue has now been moved to the British Embassy. The entrances are decorated with British Imperial...
