Basilica y Convento de San Francisco

by iwys

The Basilica y Convento de San Francisco was designed by a Jesuit architect in 1730, but a a German baroque facade was added in the early 20th century, along with statues of Saint Francis of Assisi, Dante, and Christopher Columbus.

Monumento a los Caídos en Malvinas

by iwys

The Monumento a los Caídos en Malvinas, or Falklands War Memorial, commemorates Argentine troops who died in the Falklands War of 1982. The monument is a marble wall, with the names of the fallen engraved on it. There is an eternal flame and a ceremonial guard from the Argentine army. The Falklands War started on 2 April 1982 with the Argentine invasion and occupation of the Falkland Islands and South Georgia, and ended with the Argentine surrender on 14 June 1982. The conflict was the result of a protracted diplomatic confrontation regarding the sovereignty of the islands. Neither state officially declared war and the fighting was largely limited to the territories under dispute and the South Atlantic. The initial invasion was considered by Argentina as the re-occupation of its own territory, and by the UK as an invasion of a British overseas territory.Britain launched a naval task force...

Monumento San Martin, Buenos Aires

by iwys

The Monument to General San Martin and the Armies of Independence is a bronze equestrian monument on a base of polished red granite in honour of General José de San Martín, the Argentine national hero, associated with four major milestones in the wars of South American independence: the Crossing of the Andes, the Proclamation of Independence of Peru, the Battle of Salta and the Taking of Montevideo. The statue of the Liberator on a horse was the first equestrian monument in Argentina, when it was officially unveiled on July 13, 1862. It was designed by the French sculptor, Louis Joseph Daumas. The brass groups around the base were added in 1910 by German sculptor, Gustavo Eberlein. It is certainly an impressive monument.

BA to Iguazu

Galerías Pacífico, Buenos Aires

by iwys

Galerías Pacífico was originally built to host Au Bon Marché Argentina stores, but due to financial problems, the stores were never opened and the building was occupied instead by small shops. On December, 1896, the Galerías became the first head office of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes. In 1908, the Ferrocarril Buenos Aires al Pacífico took over part of it for offices and it started to be called "Edificio Pacífico."Architects Jorge Aslan and Héctor Ezcurra redesigned it in 1945. The commercial sector was separated from the office sector, and it was crowned with a 450 square meters dome, covered with twelve painted murals by Spilimbergo, Berni, Castagnino, Colmeiro, and Urruchúa. The fresco by Antonio Berni is one of the most famous paintings. After years of neglect, the galleries were redesigned and reopened in 1990 as a luxurious shopping centre.

Hire a car

by DaveG0906

The best way to get around Argentina is to hire a car. Once out of the towns the roads are clear with very little traffic and as there are few roads, it's difficult to get lost. Even in towns, they're mainly based on the grid system. The road surface varies, some tarmaced and others mainly gravel. However, a four wheel is not always necessary. It is best to check with the rental company for advice. The advantage of having the car is that you get most sites to yourself after the coach party's have left and you can take your time. The price of fuel was about half the price of the UK.

Ice Trekking in Patagonia

by DaveG0906

Whilst I was staying in El Calafate one of the best activities was ice trekking on a glacier. In a group of about 20 you are instructed to fit crampons onto your boots. Following a guide the group set off over the ice. The whole experience lasts about 3 hours and although expensive is amazing.

Torres del Paine National Park

by Robmj

Strictly speaking the TDP is in the Chilean part of Patagonia however many going to Argentina will jump across into Puerto Natales often via a 6 hour (only 200kms but the roads are not flash) bus trip from El Calafate. The TDP is sensational and many trekers do the "W" circuit which can be spread over 3-4 days or do the longer full circuit taking anything upto 8-10 days. Come prepared for all extremes of weather and bring or hire camping equipment so you are not limited to the sites with huts, gives you more flexibility for the various sections of the circuit. The scenery is just breathtaking and treking the TDP is one the best experiences I've had.

El Chalten: Fitz Roy Ranges

by Robmj

El Chalten still exudes the charm of being a slightly "frontier" town. Its quite remote, only recently has added electricity from the grid and its facilities (eg EFTPOS) sometime work, sometimes don't. Tourist is rapidly growing driven on the town's superb status as a treking and climbing paradise. The ramshackle buildings, dirt road and rough unpaved "highways" to get here add to its charm, but it has plenty to offer visitors, great cafes, bars, parrillas (steak houses) and plenty of accommodation choice from slightly up-market to the free camping site. There are many treks to choose, day walks through to routes that can camp you out for a few nights. The scenery is just stunning and you need to get out and enjoy it. It is part of the Parque Nacional Los Glaciers.

Buenos Aires - Microcentre

by Robmj

There is so much written about BA, I won't try and repeat it all. This tip is to identify the Microcentre is a great place to base yourself while visiting. Very central and many attractions in the area. Check out the Plaza de Mayo, Basilica de San Fransico, dine in the many awesome parrilla's, visit the Recoleta, San Telmo and La Boca barrios (suburbs), visit the Plaza de la Republica and the huge avenue of Av 9 de Julio and visit the theatre Colon. There are many many more things to do, these are just a snapshot of whats available, make sure you walk around a lot, great way to see the place and soak up the atmosphere and vibe of the place.
