Any ideas!!!

by Spell74

Hi Melissa, I'm afraid i cant help you on where to go, as i too am in the same situation as yourself, i'm off to Argentina for 6/7 weeks as of Nov 8th, and have really no idea of what or where to go, saying that, i have just booked up a 2 week spanish course with home stay, so i was kinda thinking in those 2 weeks i would meet people and get ideas from them. However, it does seem that you may have done a little more homework than me, so if you wouldnt mind, i'd like to hear of any tips of itinaries you may have picked up, ie, prices, trips, routes, places, etc etc....And if our paths cross, it would be great to meet up.

Apartments in Buenos Aires and Hotel in Iguazu

by jimmychurri

February is a great time to come to Buenos Aires if you like to catch a tan and don't mind the heat. I have rented flats many times in Buenos Aires and have found the apartments to be quiet charming. I prefer to stay in luxury apartments and have had flawless experiences renting with Buenos Aires Stay ( http://www.buenosairesstay.com ). I suggest calling the office and asking for Lorena who was my sales agent. She will also help pick out the ideal neighborhood for your trip (probably Palermo or Recoleta) She was fantastic and helped get me a free phone rental for my visit. If you are going to Iguazu, you might want to stay in the Sheraton that overlooks the falls - make sure you ask for a Falls View room and not a Jungle View. You can walk right to the falls from the hotel withut a guide (I had a guide who was useless and expensive). The trail is VERY self-explanatory and is easy to do...

Tierra del Fuego National Park

by Robmj

A great hiking area with many choices of track and a superb place to spot birdlife (condors, gulls, orange-billed ducks etc etc). You can camp in the Park or stay in huts which now seem to be popping up. Its an easy bus or taxi trip from Ushuaia.

Ushuaia: worlds end

by Robmj

"fin del mundo" means the end of the world or world end, and this is how Ushuaia brands itself.Nearly at the southern most point of Argentina, Ushuaia is the southern most city on the 54th parallel. What used to be a frontier town is now expanding and modernising to deal with the tourists who come for the attraction of being at the world's end, but also to see the Begal Channel, use as a departure point for Antarctica or to trek around the town and in the stunning Tierra del Fuego national park.

Iguazu Falls

by Robmj

Based on the border of Argentina and Brazil, these falls are huge and spectacular. The power, noise and volume of water will leave you a little awestruck. On the Argentinian side a series of paths and catwalks get you right amongst the falls. You can walk right out into the Garganta del Diablo (the devils throat) which is the heart of the falls with three sides. The Brazilian side has the more panoramic views but is not as interactive. The whole area is set in a national park with rainforest, hence there are lots of opportunities to see unique birds, flora and fauna and maybe the old wild animal if you are lucky, or unlucky as in 1997 an infant was killed by a jaguar. Overall, these falls are very special.

Teatro Colón, Buenos Aires

by iwys

Teatro Colón is the leading opera house in South America and I'd have loved to see a performance, but it was closed for renovation when I was here and will not reopen until 2010. The current building ws built between 1904 and 1908. It was designed by architects, Francesco Tamburini, Vittorio Meano and Jules Dormal, and has seating for 2,478, with room for 500 more standing. Some of the greatest names in the world of classical music, opera and ballet have performed here, including Richard Strauss, Igor Stravinsky, Camille Saint-Saëns, Manuel de Falla, Aaron Copland, Herbert von Karajan, Leonard Bernstein, Zubin Mehta, Daniel Barenboim, Enrico Caruso, Maria Callas, Montserrat Caballé, Alfredo Kraus, José Carreras, Kiri Te Kanawa, Plácido Domingo, Vaslav Nijinsky and Rudolf Nureyev.

El Obelisco, Buenos Aires

by iwys

Buenos Aires's obelisk was built to commemorate the four hundredth anniversary of the city's foundation. It was designed by architect Alberto Prebisch and inaugurated on May 23, 1936. It is 67.5 metres high and made of concrete. One surprising thing is that it is possible to climb up inside the obelisk. A door leads through to a 206-step flight of stairs to four windows of the top.

Edificio Kavanagh, Buenos Aires

by iwys

When it was completed in 1936, Edificio Kavanagh was, with a height of 120 m, the tallest building in Latin America and the tallest reinforced concrete building in the world. it was designed in a style which is a mixture of Art Decó and Modernism, by architects Gregorio Sánchez, Ernesto Lagos and Luis Maria de la Torre. The developer, Corina Kavanagh, had to invest all she'd inherited to get this skyscraper built. She lived for many years on the 14th floor in the building's largest apartment. There is a legend that says the building was designed as a revenge. One of Corina's daughters fell in love with the son of the aristocratic Anchorena family, who lived in a palace and had built a church next to the site of the Kavanagh Building. The Anchorenas stopped the marriage to a member of a nouveau riche family. In revenge, Corina Kavanagh decided to build a skyscraper that would block the...

Iglesia de Santa Teresa, Córdoba

by iwys

Iglesia de Santa Teresa was founded in 1628 by Juan de Tejada, who promised it in prayer to Santa Teresa if she would save the life of his seriously ill daughter. His prayers were answered and his daughter was cured so he funded the building of a Carmelite convent and church, bearing the saint's name. Inside it now is a museum of religious art.

El Cabildo, Córdoba

by iwys

El Cabildo was Córdoba's town hall during the colonial era. The first building work started in 1588, but the current building was completed, in neoclassical style, by military engineer Juan Manuel Lopez, in 1786. It was declared an historical monument in 1941.
