the penguin island close to Haberton

by globetrott

There is a penguin island close to Estancia Haberton and excursions to this island are offered by many bus- and shipping companies in Ushuaia. I passed by there in early November and there were only about 20 penguins on the beach where we got close to by our catamaran on the way to Haberton. When you take a look at photos of the webpage below, there seem to be thousands of them later in the year and in case that you are interested in penguins, take that bustour, they make a stop in Harberton as well !

Bahia Ensenada and Isla Redonda

by globetrott

Isla Redonda is the small island in the Beagle-Channel that you will see on my main photograph in the front with the great mountain-scenery of Patagonia in the background. The photo was taken from Bahia Ensenada, where our tour through the National Park had a short stop and there you will be able to buy postcards and post your letters with the stamp of the "end of the world". That postoffice is inside the hut of the pier.Bahia Ensenada and Isla Redonda are inside the national park "Tierra del Fuego", not far from the end-station of the museum-train.

Puerto Haberton: Museo Acatushun

by globetrott

Museo Acatushun de Aves y Mamiferos Marinos Australes is the full name of a small museum in Estancia Haberton where you will see a large collection of whale-bones inside and outside of the building. It is a walk of 10-15 minutes to get there by foot from the ship and you normally will have enough time to go there and take a look at least at the whalebones that are displayed OUTside of the building.Museo Acatushun is where you enter the farm-area, when arriving by car, in a distance of maybe 1500 meters from the main farmbuilding / restaurant of Estancia Haberton.

Estancia Viamonte

by globetrott

Estancia Viamonte is a good example of a place, that is listed on VT although it consists only of a very few houses, or like in Viamonte, it is actually nothing else than a large farm including several buildings for the family, the cattle and the employees, and all of the village is also fenced in and you have to open the gate before you can drive into this "village" and at the same time there are places like Tolhuin, that is the 3rd largest town in Fireland / Tierra del Fuego with maybe 8000 inhabitants, but not listed on VT at all.Estancia Viamonte is directely on the N3 / the Panamerican Highway, at Km 2885

San Pablo & the wrack of the Desdemona

by globetrott

San Pablo is a really tiny village at the Atlantic Coast of Tierra del Fuego / Fireland and its main attraction is the wreck of the Desdemona. The wreck of Desdemona is more or less the only sight in San Pablo, that is not even a village, but rather a few houses and an old motel, that is not used anymore and most of its windows are broken. You will see the ships-wreck of the Desdemona already a long time in the distance, but it takes some time, until you will find the best path to get there. In any case you have to walk the last 200 meters on the beach, through the muddy ground, but it was worth it.See the size of that ship, when you click on my last 2 photos and see my brother with his video-camera in comparison with the ship !-----------------------------------The road from Ushuaia to San Pablo is first the ordinary N3 , the Panamericana Highway, but north-east of Tolhuin you will have to...

Rio Grande: Misión Salesiana Museum

by globetrott

The Misión Salesiana Museum is a bit outside of Rio Grande, next to the N3 / Panamericana Highway, when you are driving north. There is still a school for agriculture there, 2 churches and an interesting museum about the native people, who totally died out some decades ago, shortly after the arrival of the early white settlers. Drive in, take a parking-space and explore the area on your own. Everywhere the entrance is free, except in the museum, where you have to pay just the small amount of 4 ARG $ (=0,50 Euro)Museo Monsenor Fagnano is the name of the interesting museum is one of the side-buildings of the mission. You will find a lot of exhibits about the 4 native tribes, who where living in Fireland, when the monks of Don Bosco had arrived. These tribes were water-nomads, travelling from one place to the other and they were dressed only with thin furs all year long. Just think of the...

Rio Grande : the largest town in Fireland

by globetrott

Rio Grande is the largest town in Tierra del Fuego / Fireland and it is an easy fullday-trip from Ushuaia. Rio Grande sounds like a giant river but in fact it is just such a narrow river, but at least it had an interesting old bridge, that you can still see below the new bridge for the cartrafic of today.Just imagine, that in the old days all of the trafic was going over that bridge, including thousands of sheep or cows, when they were taken from one of the farms to the freezing point. The bridge dates back to 1920 and its components were imported from USA.You are not allowed to walk over it, and in case that you want to do it anyway, take a look first for the many rusty or broken parts of the construction !!

Puerto Harberton -the first european settlers

by globetrott

Puerto Harberton was the first settlementof europeans in Tierra del Fuego / Firelandand it is an easy daytrip by boat or by car from Ushuaia.Puerto Haberton was founded in the middle of the 19th century and nowadays it is still a farm / estancia, although they mainly live on the tourists now.Inside of the main building there is a great restaurant and there is a lovely garden as well.No matter, where you are going in Tierra del Fuego / Fireland, you will hardly ever find a garden, where the grass is in such an intensive green like in the garden of the Estancia Haberton in front of the restaurant. Also the setting of the trees is typical for an english garden and this part of the farm is also part of the guided tour through the farm, that is always offered in english and spanish for the tourists, arriving by the tour-ships from Ushuaia.
