Plaza de Islas Malvinas in Ushuaia by AKtravelers The first thing we did when we arrived in Ushuaia was to get out of the B&B and walk downtown. For scenic reasons, we decided to take the road that ran adjacent to the harbor. Not only was there a park with pleasant landscaping and a great view of the Beagle Channel, but we also stumbled on a Plaza that memorialized the war with the UK over the Malvinas (the Falklands to the Brits). I never had given the subject much thought, but it dawned on me that Ushuaia is the capital of the province to which Argentina claims the Malvinas belong. Leave a Comment

Catching both Chile and Argentina in one view by AKtravelers Begle Channel is one of the more beautiful waterways in the world, cutting through the declining Andes of Chile and Argentina. The Channel is named after the HMS Beagle, the ship on which Charles Darwin sailed when he made the observations on which he based his book "On the Origin of Species". Leave a Comment

Horses drink from a National Park stream by AKtravelers As part of the train ride we took (see Tourist Traps), we did visit Tierra del Fuego National Park. We also spent an afternoon in a remote area of the park as part of our backpack. While I don't recommend the train, I do recommend taking some time to see at least a part of the park on foot, at the leisurely pace of a hiker. The mountains are beatiful, the air is clean and the landscape is green. In the southern part of the park, you can see areas that were logged by the prisoners that were the island's original "settlers". Leave a Comment

One of the many ponds on Tierra del Fuego by AKtravelers Tierra del Fuego's main attraction is its beautiful backcountry, most of which is NOT in Tierra del Fuego National Park. In for days on the Circuito de Sierra Valdivieso, we spent only an hour or two inside park boundaries. The rest is on unprotected wild land, apparently owned only by ravenous beavers. If you go to Tierra del Fuego, you should go to hike. But bring appropriate gear for rain and even snow during the summer months. Leave a Comment

Beaver skull or chocolate? What would you want? by AKtravelers If you spend time in the back country, take a look around for beaver bones. Though it's hard to see live beavers, because they are shy, dead beavers are less likely to hide. I found this beaver skull on the first day. I saved it and gave it to Andrea for Valentine's Day. She liked it. Seriously. Leave a Comment

Named after HMS Beagle, the ship that carried a young naturalist by the name of Charles Darwin on his voyage of discovery, the Beagle Channel is the narrow stretch of water that separates Argentine Tierra del Fuego from the Chilean (southern) part of the island. Boat trips into the channel can be booked from Ushuaia and offer views of the sealions on Isla de los Lobos, the lighthouse at Isla les Eclaireurs and a chance to set foot on the uninhabited Isla Bridges Leave a Comment Address: Boats depart from Muelle Turistico, Ushuaia

End of the World Station by Sharrie From Ushuaia, you can embark on a single journey lasting 50 mins to the Tierra Del Fuego National Park. B4 that, you've to get a taxi to the Estacion del Fin del Mundo (the End of the World station) which is about 8 km from the city center of Ushuaia. It's relatively cheap to get there. I can't remember the exact amount but it's less than US$5. The round trip will last 1 hour 40 mins. Southern Fueguean Railway (Ferrocarril Austral Fueguino) is the company that runs the same route as the old Convict Train did 80 years ago. Ushuaia's history is related to the "Prison for Relapsed Felons" from year 1902 - 1947. Leave a Comment

Experience the "Golden Age" of Steam by Sharrie So, the big question is: "Is it worth taking the trip?" Depends. If you are very into trains, esp. steam trains, this is a must for you. I heard many enjoyed it tremendously. If you want to be on the End of the World Train, then no question about it. This is the End of the World Train. How many chances in your life will you go to the end of the world? If you want to visit the national park, this is one good way of getting there. If you just take the ride & like me had to rush back to the airport, then forget it! It's not that great! ;-) No point wasting time & even run the risk of missing your flight! Leave a Comment

Just unzip your tent to see this by AKtravelers One of the great things about backpacking is the view you get when you unzip your tent. Almost universally, sunrise is the most beautiful time of day, and you get to see beautiful moments just by reaching out your hand and pulling down the zipper. Leave a Comment
