The N3 - The Panamericana Highway

by globetrott

The Panamericana - Highway:17.848 km from Alaska to Firelandthis road starts in Alaska and combines several highways through different countries to the so-called "Panamerican Highway / Panamericana " and in Argentina this road is called N3 and the distances are calculated from Buenos Aires, so the end of the road in Lapataia is at Km 3079, equivalent to Km 17848 of the total Panamericana. You really cannot always compare the quality of the roads with an ordinary highway, mostly it is just a wide asphalt road with a wide track in each direction, so overtaking is only possible with no onward cars and mostly there will be a "hard shoulder" on each side, wide enough to park a car, but without asphalt and just uneven gravel, where you can drive on only in a low speed. The very end of the Highway Nr.3 to Lapataia is quite narrow and just a sandy road through the National Park, at some places you...

In Ushuaia: the southernmost train in the world

by globetrott

The former train of the prisoners is now :"The train at the end of the world" and it is also the southern-most train in the whole world. It was constructed between 1902 and 1909 as a train used by the prisoners to transport the wood of the felled trees to the town of Ushuaia. The bigest part of the rail-track of the prisoner-train does not exist any more, just a small museum-train uses a part of the original track of the former prisoner-train, and it uses locomotives and also wagons that were never used by the prisoners. The locomotive on my main picture was built in 1938 in Germany. You will find this museum-train in a distance of about 10 km from Ushuaia and you will go through a part of the National Park, you will pass by the "cemetery of the trees" and go to Macarena Waterfalls, where a short stop of 10-15 minutes will give you enough time to step up to the waterfalls.

Bus to Ushuaia

by sandylou

to get to Ushuaia from Puerto NAtales in Chile, you have to take a 4 hour bus ride to Punta Arenas. From there on you will probably have to stay the night over in Punto Arenas as busses from Ushuaia leave only a few days a week, more or less three times a week. From Punto Arenas you will then leave with the bus in the morning and spend the whole day driving and waiting to cross with the boat, then cross borders and arrive in Ushuaia in the evening. It is about a 12hours bus ride from Punta Arenas... a real hassle!
