One of the main reasons to visit Ushuaia is as the starting point for an Antarctic cruise. These all leave from the port on the southern side of town. We enjoyed strolling around here and checking out all the other ships – and inevitably comparing them with our own! There’s also a small café, and a bizarre giant penguin which makes for a fun photo or two (see my 3rd photo).

For anyone not taking a cruise however, you need to be aware that you’ll only be able to walk so far along the pier before being asked to show a card to indicate that you’re a passenger on one of the ships, and without this evidence you won’t be allowed to proceed.

Hermoso!

My short trip to Ushuaia finished... I must go away... Another plane, a new destiny. I will keep the last sight of Ushuaia from the plane with me until the end of my life...

Mi corto viaje a Ushuaia llegó a su fin... Debo irme...

The plane made the last stopover at Rio Gallegos; from there, the sky was cloudy, so I could not see anything; I was a little upset, because everybody told me that the vision of Ushuaia from the air was amazing. The plane was landing when suddenly, the clouds opened and all the magnificence of Ushuaia appeared...

Tierra del Fuego was inhabited 11.000 years ago, but the natives arrived in Beagle Channel 7.000 years ago. Four ethnic groups peopled this area: Kawesar (or Alakaluf), Yamana, Selk'Nam (or Ona) and Haush. The Yamana people inhabited the place where nowadays is Ushuaia and the National Park; yamana means "human being", "to be alive". These natives were nomadic, they built canoes with tree barks, and were good fishers and hunters, and they ate mussels, fishes, seals, mushrooms, berries, birds. They lived naked, and covered their bodies with fat; the fire always burnt at their huts and canoes.
When the Europeans arrived, they brough unknown diseases and changed the Yamanas way of life; in a few years, these natives disappeared.

I had read a lot about the Penitentiary, but the visit to this historical place really shocked me... Huge, desolate, dark, cold... A very touching experience.

The city of Ushuaia is located on the shore of the Beagle Channel and surrounded by the Martial Mounts. It is the capital of the Province of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctic and Island of the South Atlantic.
The town was founded in October 12 1884, when the argentine flag is hoisted in front of Ushuaia Bay
You can spend a couple of days in Ushuaia trekking, horse riding, mountain bike riding, fishing or having incredible rides along Beagle Channel and Tiera del Fuego national park. It is also a starting point for sails to Cape Horn and Antarctica

On your first day in Ushuaia, visit the two main museums in the city, "Museo del Presidio" (Jail's Museum) and "Museo del Fin del Mundo" (End of world Museum). If you can visit only one, choose the first.

It's very important to do it, because you'll understand everything you'll see and visit during the following days of your visit.

Ushuaia was founded in 1884 with the purpose of sitting down sovereignty on the southern area. It is considered the most southern city in the world. It is located on the Ushuaia bay on the north coast of the Beagle channel. Ushuaia is situated at the base of the last cord of the mountain range of the Andes.

In the architecture of the city you will see a combination of the original housings made of wood and iron sheet and on the other side modern buildings from around 1980. From 1902 up to 1947 Ushuaia was headquarters of the famous Prison of Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, where the most dangerous criminals were sent. This prison is now a wonderful museum!
