a fun window display at Calafate

This shop is great for buying maps, postcards, books about Patagonia and Antactica, woolen and synthetic clothing to keep you warm plus touristy stuff such as tea-towels. There is a huge range of t-shirts and sweatshirts.
The staff are helpful and they speak some English.

What to buy: Well, the historical maps were expensive but the other maps were good value.
The woolens were great value.

a great shop for instruments and other crafts

A large, busy store along St.Martins. It's on a street corner.
The staff inside a friendly and helpful; some of the speak some English.

What to buy: As a teacher interested in music, I always try to collect local instruments when I'm aboad. This shop had a good selection including wooden flutes, guiros, kalimbas, shakers and drums. I spent about US$100 in there --but I did buy the expensive kalimbas.

There's plenty of other craft work too!

Main street in Ushuaia

Ushuaia is a good place to buy your Antarctic mementos, as it’s much cheaper than the cruise ships. We saw soft toy penguins in droves, but I didn’t buy one, cute as they were, because I’d resolved only to buy if I could find a match to one of the species we’d seen on our trip, i.e. gentoo or chinstrap. Unfortunately almost all the ones in the shops were of emperor penguins, and although these are very striking birds I don’t think they’re so cute! We did however buy a small wooden carving of a penguin and also some jewellery.

What to buy: This is also a good place to buy bad weather gear, unsurprisingly – but if you’re shopping before heading out on an Antarctic trip do check whether, as in our case, a warm parka is provided as you may not need to buy one at all.

La Anonima Avd San Martin 1506

Selecting a shopping area in Ushuaia is rather easy, depending on your wishes, there is only ONE main shopping street, Avenida San Martin (who could guess?).
Artisanal products, winter clothes, souvenirs and mineral juwelry, you will find it here.
Even a deparment store, "La Anonima" is located at the end of the Avenida, direction Panomaric view

What to buy: Artisanal products and souvenirs, bread, sandwiches, meat and local Argentinian wine, or local JC from Liége hard stuff !
Strange you can't find fresh fish ?!

What to pay: Cash, the locals pay often with "LA"credit cards like we do in Europe

The streets are lined with one shop after another. You can book a tour, buy gifts, maps, books, exchange money, or buy some warm clothing.
Anything that you want you can find downtown, except we never did find a grocery store. Someone said to look for a Coca-Cola
sign?

chocolate wrap

As you walk down San Martin, you will smell, from time to time through the open doors of the shop, the addicting smell of chocolate. If you are not a calorie freak, take a bite. It's great. Buy some as presents to take home. Friends will love it, and probably will enjoy it more then some small tourist sunnier.

What to buy: I love the Chocolate coverd almonds

STREET MURAL

The street of San Martin is full of souvenirs and handcrafts shops. After strolling the street a few times back and forth, we bought most of our staff in this store. Somehow it seemed more genuine and less factory made.

Handicraftmen

Ushuaia is a touristic place, so there is one gift shop afther another one; these shops usually sell mass-production articles. You can find "real" handicrafts at the main street (San Martín), where the handicrfatmen install their little tables with their crafts.

Seemingly half of the businesses in Ushuaia have signs that say, "Fin del Mundo," boasting that their coffee shop, restaurant, internet cafe, barber shop, etc., is the
southern most establishment of such sort in the world.

Usually cheap but not as interesting as things that dont read like that.
