 | Ushuaia Things To Do | Tips 1 - 10 of 168 | | I found this little museum casually, when I was wandering along the streets of Ushuaia; it is a small but touching museum, which shows the geological origin of Tierra del Fuego, the peopling of the place, the way of life of natives (there were four groups: Yamana, Alakaluf, Selk'Nam and Haush), the arrival of European people and the extinction of the local people. The museum is well documented, and the exhibition is very attractive and didactic. In 1896 the first group of convicts arrived in Ushuaia to begin the reincidents jail (it was a group of houses made of wood and tin); in 1902, the Military Prison, which was situated at Isla de los Estados, was moved to Ushuaia for humanitarian reasons. The same year began the construction of the National Prison; at the time, Ushuaia had only 40 houses. The building was done by the prisoners, and it was finished in 1920. It had five pavilions, and 380 single cells (but sometimes were there more than 600 convicts). The prisoners had the posibility of primary education and paid jobs. The jail worked until 1947. Inside the cells, you will find the history and the stories of the jail and the prisoners. Leave a Comment

Locomovil (locomobile) was an ancient steam boiler used at the sawmills (one of the jobs that the prisoners had was tree felling); the oddity of this mahcine was its moving condition: some oxen carried it to where it was necessary. There are a lot of activities inside and outside Ushuaia; I was there only three days, so I could not do a lot of trips. The most popular day trips are the navigation along the Beagle Channel (there are several options here; the trip may include different islands, like de Los Lobos, Los Pájaros, the penguin station, the lighthouse; the cost is between 50 and 130 pesos, and the catamarans set off from the tourist dock) and the Lakes Road (to visit lakes Escondido and Fagnano, situated among the mountains; this trip costs about 110 pesos). There are many other activities, so if you want more info, you can check the website. Hands up! Do not worry, I did not have any problems with the police... One of the most famous and amazing places of Ushuaia is the ancient Ushuaia Jail and Military Prison; this outstanding building houses several exhibitions: the Maritime Museum, Argentina in Antarctica, and the touching Penitentiary Museum. To link the prison to a timber area, the convicts built the world's southernmost railroad. Today the Train to the End of the World offers daily steam-driven excursions in replicas of English passenger wagons. During the journey, a bilingual guide (Spanish-English), recount the history of the "Convict Train". The train goes through the Pipo River across the Quemadon Bridge and makes its first stop at the De la Macarena Cascade. Here you can either go down the steps to the Indian campsite reconstruction of one of the four native tribes that lived in Ushuaia, or go up the steps to see the Macarena Waterfall whose source is in the Le Martial mountain range. After fifteen minutes, the train continus on its journey to a sub-Antarctic forest. It crosses different sites where the prisoners worked every day for 50 years cutting down trees. After skirting the "Turbal", a raised sphagnum moss bog typical of Tierra del Fuego, the train arrives at the "Estacion del Parque". There is a bar and toilet. From here you can either return by train to the Estacion del Fin del Mundo or continue your excursion deeper into the Tierra del Fuego National Park.To do that you have to pre-book a tour bus. The cost is 17 USD return and 16 USD one way. In season, first train at 9:00 last at 17:00 Leave a Comment

the Beagle Channel was named after a ship and it is a system of natural waterways with lots of small islands, where you will be able to watch seabirds, see-wolfs, seals, penguins and other interesting animals. A lot of ships are offering halfday and fullday-tours of the Beagle-channel,one of the highlights of such a tour is always "The lighthouse at the end of the world". Most tours are made by catamarans, that are able to get very close to the islands, so you are able to take perfect photographs ! Leave a Comment Directions: The Beagle-Channel is west and east of Ushuaia.

One of the pavilions is not reconditioned; that means it is just as it was in 1947; this pavilion is really touching and creepy, and the rainy afternoon I visited the place did not help to make it look better. Anyway, I think this is THE place to visit when you are in Ushuaia. Leave a Comment

One outstanding building in Ushuaia is the ancient Governor's house, where nowadays is the Provincial Legislature. This building was built in 1894, and rebuilt in 1920 after a fire. What I liked most is the beautiful garden, full of poppies and lupines. Between two pavilions, outside the museum, there is a train (actually, the remains of a train); this train was used to carry stones and wood from outside to the jail, and other different stuff from the dock to the jail. It was know as "the prisoners train", and was a narrow gauge train (60 cm). Leave a Comment
