Well, I didn't stay long, but I was there during a very dangerous time, I personally didn't run into any problems, but an Irishman I was travling with was shot at during his stay in Buenos Aires during the Riots. He spent the duration of his stay in the Irish Embasy.

Pickpockets are common in the central parts of Buenos Aires. They are attracted to the areas where you´ll find the tourist hotels. They are more active during weekends in the most central parts of the city. Putting mustard on your clothes and then helping to wiping it off is the most common way to get inside your pockets. DO NOT CARRY A VISA CARD. IF YOU LOSE IT YOU´LL LOSE ALL THE MONEY THATS ON YOUR ACCOUNT. Travellers checks are more reliable. A Visa card is not advisable in any country in South America!

While Buenos Aires is generally a safe city for tourists, there are certain parts where you would not go and other places where being aware of people around you goes a long way to ensuring your personal and property security. In particular, avoid walking the streets of La Boca and be on the look out for thieves outside the railway station in Retiro. Also be careful around five star hotels.

There's a tour company in Mendoza called Jocoli (or something like that!), anyway, the driver we had over two days was a bit like a Nazi! Neither him or the guide spoke a word in English, and took back handers from this greasy cafe... They stopped at the worst place we'd see and MADE us all eat there!!! AVOID!!!

The best way of getting around...

by wadekorzan

The best way of getting around is by the city's extensive and inexpensive subway system. Taxis are a great way of getting around at a very cheap price BUT IT IS ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL to only catch cabs designated as Radio Taxis. This taxis will have 2 signs on each side of the car (on the doors). NOT JUST ONE SIGN. It is not uncommon for robberies to occur in taxis not designated as Radio Taxis. If robbed never struggle, give them everything you have. As a blond foreigner who stands out of the crowd in Argentina I have never had this bad experience in 3 years but I hear stories such as this often.

The employes may rob you in the hotel if you left expensive things and money on the room for a couple of hours so be carefull, if it happens, the hotel wont take responsability. You can use the Hotel´s safe box but they aren´t guaranteed either. It´s a shame but is real :(

We wanted to take a bus trip...

We wanted to take a bus trip from Iguazu in Brasil to Paraguay. Travel down along the border with Argentina. And then cross again to Missiones and up again to Iguazu. I contacted several addresses in The Netherlands to be sure, we wouldn't get into any problems because of some paperwork or something we might need. They all told us, we didn't need any special paper or anything to make this trip. So we took the bus and crossed the border to Paraguay. No problem. Untill we wanted to get back to Argentina later on. They told us, we needed a special stamp in our passports when we arrived in Paraguay! While there isn't even a real border. There's no control or office or anything. So this was just b... But they didn't let us cross the border untill we payed a big fine! So: be very carefull whenever you decide to go to Paraguay. They love your money!

Despite its current political and economic troubles, Argentina generally remains a safe destination for foreign travelers, although there have been several reports of muggings. Protests continue, but they have been mostly limited to peaceful, middle-class crowds banging on pots and pans. The people's anger is directed at their government, not foreigners, and small businesspeople welcome tourists and the influx of money they provide. Still, travelers should exercise caution, avoiding large gatherings that could turn violent or walking alone at night. Banks have been another focus of public concern and travelers should watch for signs of trouble when visiting financial institutions. Some tourists have reported problems using credit cards and traveler's cheques.

In Buenos Aires be on guard. I caught someone with their hand in my day pack while on a bus heading downtown. I met someone who got robbed with the old bird-droppings on the shoulder routine, and another couple robbed at gunpoint in the 'La Boca' area.

There is a very common trick how tourists get robbed on the streets of BsAs even during daylight. I have been warned by many people and almost got trapped as well. I couldn't believe it!You will be walking on th street taking pictures of the Casa Rosada (picture on the left by the way) or any other sights and all from a sudden you will feel something on your arm or your legs or anywhere on your exposed body parts. Its usually something green that smells weirdly and most people think its either something that fell of a bird or from some tree. Got not tissues? Be sure that there will be a very friendly couple that will offer you some and even will be so nice to help you cleaning your cloths and arms. Once you are clean, you will realize that they alsohad cleaned up your pockets and freed you from your annoying wallet. True story, happened many times.Short explanation: These friendly people...
