    EMBRACING EACH OTHER

    by marcelo15 Updated Jan 13, 2005

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

As many countries do. this is a way to show the other person how you love, how you feel...In this case is to show them how you sorry for that moment. As you can see in the pic the people who are on line (in black) are receiving the condolences for their death. Of course that is a terrible moment that no one would like to be....

    the witches market

by richiecdisc Written Feb 22, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This interesting market features various objects of worship or having mystical powers. The most interesting was the llama foetus. These grotesque figures are sold to people wanting to "insure" that their newly built homes will have good luck. They bury them in the foundation and imagine them to be pricey for locals.

When I first saw these drinks I shuddered to think what this thing in the glass was. After eating baby beef hearts on a stick in Peru, I actually thought this was some type of organ in it's broth! I was relieved to find that it was in fact a dried peach and the drink was quite tasty and cheap. Okay, I may have got diarrhea from it but that is not a verified fact and at least I tried it. ;=)

    Medicinal Donkey Milk

by AlbuqRay Updated Jan 8, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

These cholitas and donkeys were along the highway in El Alto that goes to Tiwanaku. They sell fresh milk from the donkeys. I was told if you drink a small cup of warm donkey milk, you can cure many things. I did not try it. In fact, this is not a place in El Alto where you would want to stop unless you were a local.

    SAILING WISDOM

by Orkaena Written Aug 26, 2005

The locals sails the Titikaka Lake with the same boats design and construction than a thousand years ago, and without any doubt that it works efficiently.
They haven't troubles about the materials sources or provider, because the nature is their only main source of "commodities". It style of life has another great advantage, the recycling processes, because all their parts are biodegradable.
As you can see in the pic beside, even the design is beautiful, when you see at them sailing on this boats you feel something very similar to the envy. they are free.

    HOUSES

by Orkaena Written Aug 26, 2005

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

As I told you about boats in my previous tip, the same is about houses.
They live in houses with a very singular design, the techinques and construction materials are the same from a thousand years ago, and they are very appropriated for this environment end the extreme temperature changes.
Fresh in summer under the burning sun of a thin atmosphere, and warm in winter because the low temp at more than 4.000 meters a.s.l..
Shapes, shadows and colors catch your mind, strange and beautiful.

So, first talk to them, about the country and rules, and later ask a permission for picture

As noted on Bolivia page, be cautious about taking pictures, ask first. Even if you don't know the language. Just a gesture, a por favor and a smile, try it.

    Shoepolishers

    by gonzo747 Written Feb 8, 2006

Don't be afraid if you see people running around with a black mask on. They are not about to rob a bank, they are shoe polishers.
Shoe polishers are seen in La Paz as a very low class, too avoid social stigma the shoe polishers wear masks so they won't be recognised.
