If you are looking for the best experience of the Death Road at an accessible price then the Xtreme Downhill agency on Calle Sagarnaga in La Paz is the place to go. They offer the best quality bikes in Bolivia and the trip is all inclusive: all gear, all meals, a quality guide, and access to a hot shower and swimming pool at the end of the trip in Yolosa. Don´t waste your time paying more for less anywhere else.

    The Death Road

    *** the fighting troops
    Forget their useless trivia
Want to know who dies for their country?
    Meet the truckers of Bolivia.

    Neither to save their power
    Nor secure their glory
    As you may have guessed,
    The truckers of Bolivia
have a much, much different quest.
    One by one they preserve
    The pillars of their land
Should you ever meet a Bolivian trucker
do shake him by the hand.

At the hands of man and God alike
They travel the long road to La Paz
    So rough and so thin
    ten-wheeled, wide turn trucks
    sacrifice to the abyss…
    Destined to drop within.
But on these brave men cruise
    outside tires grinding
    at the creeping soil’s edge
the others half-way stuck in mud
along the cliff of life and death.

And when they see a bus before them
    Go careening off the side
    Tumbling into the canyon
    Limbs flying in familiar blur
They cross themselves, look to the sky, and mutter
“Mi vida está in tus manos”
    And sail around the curve.

So you want to meet a soldier?
    Look not to the trench.
Find a man who daily drives
    On the road of death.

Take a bike ride on the worlds most dangerous road

    by chris_i79 Written Sep 12, 2003

Unfortuanately my stay in La Paz was short and I did not get a chance to do this (still regretting it!!) But while in La Paz you can contact a company to take you on a mountain bike excursion down the worlds most dangerous highway (avg 1 death each day!!) The ride is around 75 km down a mountain and it supposed to be spectacular!!!

    Biking down Death Road

The next day, I biked down 70 kilometers on the infamous Death Road. It was 2 Britts, Eddy the Guide, and me battling down the most dangerous road on Earth! The road was coined the Death Road back in 1997 because a study determined that it was the most dangerous road on Earth. In fact, there is at least one fatal accident per month! We started up high at El Charro at an altitude of 4700 meters above sea level and finish down below near Coroico. The weather and vegetation changed drastically from a tundra like system above (it was actually snowing when we started) to the jungle-type forest below (sunny and hot when we finished). More information on my Coroico page.
