    Around the main plaza (Prefectura)

    la prefectura

Favorite thing: part of the Oruro government buildings. If you plan to stay more than 3 months in Bolivia with a normal tourist visa (3 month) you have to go here to the "prefectura" to ask for a longer visa, e.g. one month more. If I remember well it cost me 100 Bolivianos....normally it is possible to get one without any extraordinary problems, but you have to explain why and where you want to stay.

    aorund the plaza

Favorite thing: main place also called: Plaza Castro y Padilla
Unfortunately I cannot name this building that is also placed on one side of the plaza central.

Fondest memory: Also buildings of the technical university of Oruro are placed next to the plaza. On one of the coldest days of the year I have been there on a students party....all were dancing in thick winter clothes, that was really funny.

    near the Uru Uru

Favorite thing: A beautiful place to visit are the thermal bathes of obrajes...around 30 minuts by car (23 km) of distance from the centrum of Oruro on the way to Cochabamba. It´s a place to relax in a thermal pool, or just to enjoy the swimming pool and have a funny day.

    typical life in the altiplano

by chancay Written Nov 28, 2002

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: I stayed more than 3 month in Oruro to do some practical works. That has been my first time in Southamerica when I had to learn the language, met a new culture and made a lot of new friends. Oruro normally is a tranquil place, only a few tourists pass by Oruro. What you meet here is the tipical life in the highlands. The people are tranquil, everything functions more or less slowly. A long time ago Oruro has been a minary place, but nowadays all the mines are empty, a lot of people leave Oruro to go to warmer places with more chances to find work like Cochabamba or Santa Cruz de la Sierra for example.
But one week in every year there´s a big party in Oruro: CARNAVAL!
The whole city is looking forward to it already month before. They spend all their money for these special fancy dresses they wear. And there´s party two days and nights long.

Banco de Credito at plaza de armas

    Banco de credito

Favorite thing: just on of the buildings around the main plaza, but in a "modern" style constructed....so next to all the older buildings around it is an eye catcher although not very beautiful in my eyes. But banks seem to need always something special.....;-)

    view down to Oruro

Favorite thing: en Oruro no pasa mucho, es la verdad, pero si pasa algo sera en la calle 6 de agosto hasta la plaza mayor y los alrededores.
You can stay some days in Oruro to relax without seeing any other tourist.....
