Bolivian Anden

by chancay

A big part of Bolivia are the Anden and the large Altiplano (Highlands). The first time in Bolivia one of the incredible impressions was passing by car altitudes of almost 5000m, and you didn´t realized this altitude. All the time going at almost 4000m you can´t believe that these "little" mountains are already at moe than 6000m. An amazing impression for me....then driving above the clouds as near this little village "Sibiria"...unbelievable.

another pic of the Magic forest

by chancay

to point it out here: driving or just walking around in Bolivia makes you see and meet alwayssomething new!! a little sea next to the forest and therefor a (the) reason for the big humity in the forest. All together it gives this absolutely mysthic idea. Some kind of mixture of "Lord of the Rings" and "The mists of Avalon". Great atmosphere

Take care with your Gifts

by monica_pons

When travelling around Bolivia, particularly rural areas, some of us may be shocked by the apparently backward and often primitive living conditions that we encounter. In response, some are moved to compare the locals lot with our own, and experience pangs of conscience and outrage and inequalities. In attempt to salve the guilt or inspire goodwill, many distribute gifts to local children and adults. In Bolivia and many other developing countries, the lack of money, tv, cars or expensive things does not necessarily indicate poverty. The people of rural Bolivia have animals, food and homes that provide sufficient food, clothing and shelter. When short-term visitors give money, they impose a foreign system of values and upset a well-established balance. If you wish to be accepted by local people, perhaps share a conversation, teach a game from home or share your own meal. If you wish to...

More of My Fondest Memory

by richiecdisc

The next morning I went out early to find the money changers only come out when there are incoming buses and returned to the hostel to see if the owner had any suggestions. She said we could pay for the tour and room on our return from the island and we gladly accepted the offer. The smart move would have been to order breakfast and a big bottle of water, and put them both on the tab but it seemed I had left my brains in Peru. Instead I bought a few rolls and off we trudged to the boat hungry with half a litter of water. The ride to the island was stunning and the weather picture perfect. We had opted to be dropped off at the top port and then walk our way for four hours to the southernmost one, where we would be picked up. We quickly set off snapping photos the whole way and forgoing what I assumed to be the more expensive shops of the port area. The island was gorgeous and it being...

TIWANAKU It,s difficult to take only one memory of Bolivia, because the fully unforgettable moments lived on my travels to this beautiful land. Please, left me bring you three of them:-1- The really splendid historical buildings on Sucre -2- The incredible magnifiscence of the Oruro Festivities devoted to the Virgin of the Socavon (always last weekend before ash-wednesday, previous to the Holy Week Memories)-3- Visit to Tiwanaku pre incaic archeological site.

You must walk downtown with...

by kim83_50158

You must walk downtown with all the boulevards. The spanish influence is incredible. We walked this way a lot so this became a familiar sight for us. The people!! Especially since I was there on a Missions Trip with my church group, I got to see the Christian Community....and there's nothing more awe-inspiring than thousands of Nationals (and us) taking the streets for a huge parade to show their love for God!! I've never seen so many people in one place like that--there were people as far as you could see! How often would you find that in the US? Not too often! That event which took place in 98---5 years ago is still impacting my life today! :-)

Must see activities

1. La Paz, especially El Alto, the part of the town that overlooks the whole city. 2. Take a "micro" (small bus) to the ruïnes of the Aymares in Tiahuanaco (30 km outside La Paz) and see the famous Puerto del Sol. 3. Take a mountainbike trip on the world's most dangerous Road "Death Road" and experience the altitude 4. Uyuni: here your 3- or 4 days trip into the Salar starts, which is on of the stranges experiences you may ever get! Before leaving Uyuni, make sure you visit the Train Cemetry first! the salar tour is definetely the best thing to do when your in Bolivia. You get your 3 or 4 day trip in a kind of jeep, and there are about 6 persons that fit into one. Its a great time when you happen to meet some new friends to join the tour and though you will find your self for 3 days in the middle of nowhere theres still enough opportunity to party your way trough the night.

Beware of Sorrochi

by ummibrahim

Nothing is more beautiful than landing in El Alto very early in the morning. Illampu is glistening from the sun and land glows a rich reddish brown. I love the air in this country. It is so pure and crisp. Try to drink some Tri-Mate or Coca tea as soon as you land. Sorrochi, altitude sickness, hits many people and these teas having a soothing effect. Bolivia has delicious food. Pehaps my favorite thing was to drink cafe con leche and eat a steak sandwich made by an indian woman on the street.

Altiplano (Higlands) and Selva (Jungle)

by chancay

Bolivia has got almost everything. The only thing you maybe miss (as the bolivians as well sometimes) is the ocean. Nevertheless you can find beautiful regions with tropical clima as well as the cold and dry highlands with beautiful views, starclear skies and impressing mountains.Bolivia seemed to me very peaceful, for backpack travellers there is few risk if you care a little bit your baggages as normal. The different bus enterprises can bring you to a lot of places more or less frequently all over Bolivia. One of a lot beautiful impressions I made and never forget are the beautiful nights in the altiplano looking at uncountable stars on the sky without bothering lights all over the ground. The picture shows an old train (not anymore in use) on a "cementary of trains" near to Uyuni.

Unspoiled

by c_mesteller

Bolivia is stunningly beautiful. It features high mountain lakes and steamy lowland jungles. One of my favorite places was Rurrenabaque, a frontier jungle town on an Amazon tributary. Rurre was surprisingly charming and sophisticated for such a remote location. Its a great base for taking many kinds of nature tours. Its hard to pick one thing as a favorite, but I love birds so my first sight of wild macaws in the rainforest was thrilling.
