Santa Cruz is Bolivia’s largest city and its main point of entrance. Filled with palm trees, garden filled avenues, boulevards with cafes and bars, this cosmopolitan city is home of people from all parts of Bolivia and a quite diverse immigrant communities from all over the world. This great variety of people makes everybody feel at home here in this subtropical city.

Must go places: Santa Cruz (including the ruins of Samaipata, the Zoo, and Amboró National Park), La Paz (including the ruins of Tiahuanaku and Lake Titikaka), and Potosí (including Uyuni's Salt Flats).Other interesting places: The Jesuit Missions east of Santa Cruz, Sucre (judicial capital and colonial city), Yungas north of La Paz, and Oruro (during carnival).Places for outdoor sports: Fishing and hunting in the rainforest close to Santa Cruz, or skiing in Chacaltaya near La Paz. You can go mountain hicking almost everywhere I advise you to check out the trails around Samaipata, Isla del Sol, Parque Amboró and Sorata.

just take it very easy at first..La Paz is the highest capital city in the world!!altitude sickness affects most visitors, it might be a pounding headache, nausea, vomiting ...or all three, and a fact is it affects younger people more!!Hey ,but don't worry..just drink some coca tea (available everywhere)..try some Diamox tablets(available over the counter in Bolivia/Peru) and just chill out. However, on our second day there we did quite a bit of walking with no problems. the view of La Paz as seen from the road to the airport is so awesome . the city sits in a bowl with snow-capped peaks in the background .. what a memory....PLEASE CLICK ON PHOTO TO SEE PROPERLY....

A visit to the mines of Potosí and to the Salar de Uyuni are things you absolutely must do when in Bolivia. Also a visit to the market in Tarabuco (on sundays) is very worthwile. One of the best things of Bolivia is that it is not corrupted (yet) by masstourism. Mind me, I have nothing against tourists, I'm a tourist myself, but when I am far away from home I hate to see more tourists than locals. Especially when those tourists try to change a country in a place that suits themself, instead of enjoying it the way it is.The people in Bolivia are friendly, not overdone. They don't try to sell you things with every three words they speak.

I spent most of my time doing epidemiological surveillance.... This picture is one of my favorites. It's taken in Pasto Grande, a small community in the Altiplano. This little boy was quietly hidden amongst the sheep.

La Paz is located at 12000 feet is surrounded by the Andean Range, with a view of the Illimani Peak at 21000 feet. It has a great market, interesting life stile, and is a city not to be missed. Another place that shouldn't be missed in the trip from Uyuni to the salt desert and the rest of the attractions (I wrote all about it in the 'must see' chapter and the travelogue). Don't miss!!The picture is from the salt desert. Isn't that something!

Santa Cruz that is you must make time to go to 'El Rio Pirai', I do recall being very excited as a child to be taken there. The food is amazing! You can find very spicy food or you can find food 'full of favor'. The thing I miss the most would be get togethers with the family having a 'churrazco' sitting around talking!! Followed by the sound of music which goes hand in hand. Most of my uncles and cousins all play guitars and musical instruments and you can bet that there is always music at our get togethers....
Visit the Coca Museum and the Witches market! Located in the historic district of La Paz, here you'll experience the colonial architecture, the indigenous culture and their witches market where they sell funky ingredients and talismans. Lots of cheap silver items too! [Click on the pictures to make them bigger!]
