Try the coca tea and local cuisine. The tea is made from coca leaves, not to be confused with processed cocaine :) Soothing to the stomach and an interesting taste. Having my parrot Juanita adopt me when I was 8.

Take your time to see this city. As the rest of the cities in Bolivia, you need take your time in the order to find the right angle and preciate their treasures. In particular, this city of Potosí was declared by the UNESCO as World Heritage. Perhaps you, as well as me, would feel little disappointed by the first view. But, once you walk on the streets and understan what was this, well, suddenly the panorama changes. Dont...

From La Paz, take a bus to Coroico (4 hours) and you will see the most impresive road of your life, reaching 5100 m and going down again till 1300 m in only 70 km !! Weak hearts, avoid ... When crossing the Chilean-Bolivian border, where the bus made a stop, we went down to have lunch ... llama steaks with rice ... Hard but very tasty !!
The Jardin Zoologico is rated as being one of the few zoos worth seeing on the continent. I would have to agree as the animals appear to be treated humanely and are in conditions very similar to their natural habitat.

VISIT SORATA. A few hours north of La Paz (buses run from the cemetry district) the small town of Sorata lies amongst breathtaking scenery. A must for 'treckers' and worth a day or two of anybodys time. Best view from the statue of Christ.

VISIT LA PAZ. La Paz smells. It smells quite bad. However, between avoiding certain parts of the city and holding your breath in others it is an eye-opening capital. The city is rather like one big market and everything you may need can be bought on the street. The high altitude makes a beautiful setting but a breathless visit. La Paz is quite a contrast to any other city worldwide, even Bolivias other capital Sucre.
VISIT TUPIZAVery chilled out place to spend time. Nice small town situated amongst fantastic scenery (see main pic). Valle Hurmoso Hostel run by a friendly chap called 'Freddy' is a good place to stay. Tupiza offers great walks, horse trekking and jeep trips. Very much Butch Cassidy land!!
I was quite taken by the Witches Market, they sold all kinds of stuff, probably the weirdest things were llama foetuses! One puts a llama foetus in the hole where a new house is built, it is supposed to attract good luck. The whole country felt foreign to me, in French, we would call it 'dépaysement'. It's poor, superstitious, high-in-the-sky, desertic, etc. I felt far from my home but in an enjoyable kind of way.

Visit Rurrenabaque - right in the jungle, so different from the rest of Bolivia (it is actually hot there!) - go piranha fishing, swimming with river dolphins etc.(pictures coming soon) Hot springs near the Uyuni salt plains. Outside temperature was below freezing - it was snowing at the time - but the springs were amazing. Definitely the best part of the Uyuni trip
