by warlord

Bolivia is pretty much 'off the beaten path' to begin with. If you really want to get out there, you need to travel by second class bus. The headlines can be discouraging as bus plunges involving multiple fatalities are common. My advice would be to travel by daylight only, check the locals advice, and make sure your drive is sober. On a trip from Villazon to Tupiza, I saw my driver sipping some whiskey on side of the bus. You will see lots of burnt and rusted shells of former buses and dozens of crosses along the narrow winding roads that hug the edges of cliffs. But for all its potential dangers, an overland journey across Bolivia is an unforgetable experience.

One of the most amazing experience I had in Bolivia, was going on a three day climb to the Huyana Potosi (at 6080 meters). It's an impressive mountain and relatively easy (was damn hard for me and many don't finish the climb, but it's for beginners that are in good shape - no need for major technical skills of climbing). It's a guided climb. We got good gear of crampons, Ice axe, warm clothes etc and off we went. The first day was mostly training us with the crampons and ice axe. Even though I had some experience already, it was good for me because it gave me an extra day to acclimatize to a hight of about 4500 meters. The second day we proceeded to about 5200 meters where we slept ( yes, the tents were on the snow and it was freezing!!!). In midnight we got up and began for the summit. The beginning was unbearably hard for me. Walking at night, freezing, not knowing what's infront of you,...

If you're in Cochabamba, you should visit Pairumani. Its a little bit of Eden guarded by the towering Andes Cordillera Tunari. LEFT PHOTO: The Villa Albina Mansion built by the tin millionaire Simon Patino. His family now lives in France but still holds functions at this estate. Very well manicured gardens and there are llamas roaming around in the gardens. MIDDLE PHOTO: The road to the mausoleum of Simon Patino flanked by graceful palm trees. The rolling mountains behind are the Cordillera Tunari range near Cochabamba. RIGHT PHOTO: Potato fields on the way to Villa Albina. Cochabamba was once the breadbasket for the entire country due to its temperate, steady climate. (It was between 70 and 75 degrees the 3 weeks I stayed there). This fertile valley was also an important agricultural area for the Inca Empire. I think the white cloud in the middle of the photo is the last Incan Emperor...

La ciudad de Sucre. The city of Sucre. Que linda ciudad! Con razón es llamada la ciudad blanca de América. Es una ciudad tranquila. Casi no se ven turistas por aquí, pero hay que caminar por sus plazas y calles para verla. I dont know why, but there is just few tourist here. This city is called the white city of América. Is really nice. It deserve a visit. Drink here the local beer and taste the chocolates.

COROICO ('LOS YUNGAS' region)In the middle of Los Yungas region, only 4 hours from La Paz, you will find here a restfull place making your breathing much better than in La Paz and the weather much more pleasant !! Coroico has all the advantages of a tropical region without the inconvenients ... but the road leading there (sometimes trucks and buses are wider than the road itself !). Leaving La Paz you could maybe see some 'Reciris' (Aymaras preachers), praying for you to have a good trip (as they know to well the bloody dangerous road !). I recommend to stay in Coroico one night, to really have enough time to appreciate the landscapes and have some nice walks in there ...

Tupisa is very much off the beaten path for most travellers to Bolivia. In fact, those that do make it here are often stuck here for several days before transport can get them out again. Don't dispair though as there is plenty of amazing scenery to keep you occupied.

THE HIGHEST POINT OF BOLIVIA...

by marko727

THE HIGHEST POINT OF BOLIVIA IS SALAMA, ELEVATION 21,463 FEET (6542 METERS). HERE IS A SUMMIT LOG ENTRY: 'Met up with two Frenchman conveniently named Alain 1 & 2, then shared jeep transport with a Canadian woman and Peruvian man, both who had been guiding the Macchu Picchu trail. Their driver/guide was named Elio, as I recall. Over llama droppings from the village, thru the highest forest of 3 m trees up the gentle trail to base camp, then the following perfect day to the camp two at 5700m. Felt silly to go overboard tying down tent. It wasn't. Left at ~01:30 on calm clear night. Warned about pentientes, there were none on this reportedly earliest in the year summit, likely due to El Nino effects. 1/3 the way down to camp two, around 15:30h, a brewing storm hit, and soon visibility was 20-30 meters, and all of us were hit more than once with gentle, unnerving lightning. After refuge...

One of the highlights of my stay in Bolivia was the Takesi trail.I think this trail is a rather non-touristic one. We were the only ones up there. And also there were no touristic facilities. It was a big difference with what we experienced a week later on the Inca trail (check my Peru page). For the pics of the complete trail take a look here.

El Fuerte in Samaipata is Bolivia’s oldest archeological site (just one hour and a half drive west of Santa Cruz). It is not only an amazing historical and architectonic marvel, but also a beautiful place. There are plenty of places for mountain climbing and hiking in the surrounding area. Check out my Samaipata travelogues!!!
