Riding around the bend on the way to Coroico by lemondrop, 4 more photos Imagine an 11,000 ft. descent over a distance of 35 miles in some of the most spectacular scenery you will ever see. You start out in La Cumbre, outside of Lapaz, at a very cold 15,400 ft., and end in Coroico (warm 4,260ft.)The road at first is paved, but there might be snow or freezing rain/sleet, so be careful. My group was riding the downhill at a very fast speed, and the sleet felt like needles hitting my face. The road becomes rough later in the trip and eventually turns to rocks and dirt, or as in our case during heavy rains....MUD. This is where it gets less safe. The road from here is basically cut out of the side of mountains. You have a rock wall to your right, and a sheer drop to your left. The view down to your left, thousands of feet straight down, might send your head spinning. The road is quite narrow also, with sharp blind turns everywhere. Oh..guess what? When oncoming trucks approach, they (not you) have the right of way. They hug the inner side of the road near the rockwall as they pass...you must move towards the edge (the drop) to let them get by. Some areas are so narrow that you really have to get out to the very edge to let the trucks go by. The most professional and experienced mountain bike operator is said to be "Gravity Assited Mountain Biking". They have a good reputation for safety and quality bikes. My company was called "Sky Bolivia". They are cheaper, have junkier bikes and are not very safe. The guy was encouraging everyone to ride like a bat out of hell. Another thing, this company didnt even provide water to us. Guides might stop and point what remains of some of the more recent trucks, buses etc. that have plunged down over the side. There is also a stone marker written in Hebrew along the edge where an Israeli girl went over the side in a mountain biking accident. It was put there by her parents for remembrance....very sweet. You really shouldn't miss the chance to make this trip. It might be the most memorable thing you do in Bolivia. Highly recommended!!!!
Bring clothes in layers...since you start out at freezing temps and end in the heat. An insulated coat and gloves (both water resistant), over a sweatshirt, over a short sleeved shirt. This way you can easily remove layers as the temperature gets warmer. DO NOT forget sunglasses...if it is sleeting during the beginning, it will feel like needles going through your eyeballs. Bring some snacks (granola bars, bananas etc), and a couple bottles of water. One more thing..bring your camera, but keep it in a sealed plastic bag to keep it dry. again: 1-insulated water resistant coat 2-water resistant gloves 3-warm sweatshirt 4-short sleeved t-shirt 5-sunglasses 6-bottled water and snacks 7-camera and film(both in sealed plastic bag) Theme: BikingAddress: Gravity Assisted Mountain BikingPhone: 02 237 4204Directions: Ground floor office 9, Edificio Avenida, Av 16 de Julio 1490

The Incas believe that the sun and moon were created here. I don't know about that, but it sure as hell is beautiful. Set aside a day in your trip to Bolivia to hike the 13 miles from end to end of the Isla del Sol. After a chilly boat ride from Copacabana, you start out on the well marked footpath. Scenery all around is gorgeous. The water is is a beautiful azure, and the island is rocky and desertlike, with some great cacti. Off in the distance, the snowy peaks rise up to create a great vista. It takes about 6 hours to hike the entire island. The path can be rocky and uneven, stay aware to keep good footing. The island seems pretty unpopulated until you near the other end, where there is a small villiage. When you reach the beach where your boat will pick you up, have a refreshing drink and relax.
1-sunscreen 2-bottled water 3-hat (to block out the sun) 4-jacket and knit hat...the boat ride over in the morning is cold and windy 5-t-shirt....gets hot on the island after 10:00 6-sunglasses...sun is very bright on the island 7-camera and lots of flim..a polarizing filter is a must here 8-small backpack to carry your jacket, hat, water, camera etc. Theme: HikingDirections: 1.5 hour boat ride from Copacabana. Buy your tickets from the kiosk on the beach in Copacabana...about $3. Boat leaves at 8am and returns aorund 5pm.

Guide Vehicle Leading Bikers by AlbuqRay I only watched people do this on our way up the world's most dangerous road. Tour companies in La Paz furnish equipment, transportation and guides to do this. You descend 3500 m in 64 km. It is supposed to be safer than driving a car down if your bike is in good shape. A guide leads you down and would be the first one to smack into an on-coming vehicle. The pictures are near the top where the road is wider and the dropoffs less shear.
Gravity Assisted Mountain Biking in La Paz is highly recommended. Leave a Comment Theme: BikingAddress: YungasDirections: Between Unduavi Town and the village of Yolosa.

As you know most of the countries in South America love playing soccer. Including, Bolivia indeed. Almost every single city in bolivia play soccer. so if you have the chance to go to the stadium, i recommend you to go to. In la paz the most importants soccer teams are The Strongest, and Bolivar.
I think that sun glasses if it`s during the day. warm clothes if you are in la paz. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Shop in Yolosa by AlbuqRay If you survive your trip down the most dangerous road until Yolosa without taking a "shortcut," the weather will be much warmer there. A clear river runs through Yolosa. You may also purchase a soda or, if you are so inclined, a huge bag of coca leaves. Leave a Comment Theme: Biking

Following the Guide Vehicle by AlbuqRay It was the dry season and the guide vehicle kicked up a lot of dust. It's probably worth riding in the dust to know that someone is clearing a path for you on such a narrow road. There is also a guide on the lead bike. Leave a Comment Theme: Biking
