According to the legend, Manco Cápac and Mama Ocllo, son and daughter of Inti, the Sun, were born here; they are the founders of the Incan Empire. There is a cultural complex at the island, where you can see a synthesis of the local customs. The picture shows some cholitas washing their clothes at the lake. Templete by andal13 Close to La Paz (73 km or 45 miles) are the ruins of Tiwanaku, originally called "Taypicala" (central stone). Tiwanaku culture existed from 1.500 BC to 1.170 AD; in 680 AD began the expansion, so the empire extended from Bolivian Tableland to South of Peru and North of Chile and Argentina. Tiwanaku people reached important advances in architecture, engineering, astronomy, agriculture, sculpture, pottery; many causes precipitated the fall of this empire. Spaniard conquerors used the stones of Tiwanaku temples to built their own buildings (main church of Laja, a close town, is a sample of this). Nowadays, the Tiwanaku temples are being rebuilt; the awesome reconstruction and a very interesting museum can be visited. A copy of Tiwanaku main temple can be seen at La Paz. Leave a Comment

View from La Cumbre by AlbuqRay From La Paz you must pass over La Cumbre (4800 m) on the way to the most dangerous road and Coroico. Better stop and make an offering to the Pachamama for a safe journey (see my Local Customs tips). Leave a Comment

cathedral of Copacabana by chancay Copacabana is a little village at the lake Titicaca where once a year pilgrimage ends at the cathedral of Gouadalupe. It´s also the little harbour to visit "Isla del sol" and "isla de la luna", the two islands that are according to the legends the places where the first Incas appeared on earth. Lastly it is the last bolivian town on the way to Peru, already land-based to the peruvian territory, from bolivian side only reachable by boat passing the lake Titicaca Leave a Comment

view over the city by chancay Potosi once was one of the biggest cities in the world with about 150 000 inhabitants (in the 16th century). Because of its big sources of silver and other metals it has a long mine tradition during the conquista. Millions of indigenes and for the mine work fetched african slaves died in the mines. Nowadays there are still workers in the mines searching for zink and hoping for a last vein of silver, This work takes place under barbarous circunstances without any security regulations. The average reached age of these mineworkers is about 40 years. A lot of young boys far under 18 years old work there too Leave a Comment

Cochabamba is the third biggest town in Bolivia (... or meanwhile the 4th biggest, as El Alto what was once more like a part of La Paz is now almost as big as La Paz itself). The valley of Cochabamba is also called the spring valley, you´ve got always a climate not too hot and not too cold here. The valley climate is excellent for vegetable and fruit cultivation, therefor the best fruit juices come from here ;-)) ...I tried quite a few fres ones on the market places...so yummy!! There are beautiful salt flats in the south west part of Bolivia. There is a cool hotel made out of Salt. There is a 4 day tour starting from Uyuni to all the way down to the Chile border. You can just take a 3 day tour then go into Chile or take the full 4 day tour back up to Uyuni. I suggest you take a train to Uyuni for the most part of the trip if possible. Leave a Comment Directions: Southwest part of Bolivia. It starts in a town called Uyuni.
