Visit an active silver mine at Cerro Rico

by Waxbag

In 1545, the city of Potosi was built virtually overnight. Over the next twenty years, its population exploded to 100,000 making it by far the largest city in the Americas. By the 17th century it was the largest city in the world at 160,000. It imported everything from basic food supplies and construction material to Persian rugs and Chinese porcelain. Potosi grew from Cerro Rico (Rich Mountain) the richest single source of silver in the world and from it Spain and Europe were propped up nearly singled handedly . . . but at a price. Over the three centuries of colonial mining it is estimated that 9 million indigenous and African slaves were consumed in the mine or died from related diseases. After purchasing dynamite at the local tienda, we head up into the mines of Cerro Rico, in Potosi, Bolivia that, at one time, was the riches source of Silver in the world making Potosi the wealthiest...

Isla de los Pescadores

by iwys

Isla de los Pescadores, also known as Isla Inca Huasi or Incahuasi, is a bizarre volcanic island covered with giant cacti, standing incongruously in the middle of the vast salt flat of Salar de Uyuni. There are some basic facilities here for visitors, including toilets, so most expeditions stop here for lunch.

Salar de Uyuni

by iwys

Bolivia's Salar de Uyuni is the largest salt flat in the world, covering an area of approximately 10,000 sq km and made up of 10 billion tons of salt. It was formed when the prehistoric Lake Minchin, which covered much of southern Bolivia, dried up. You can drive across it for days, as long as you are in a 4WD vehicle. This is one place where you definitely need a sun hat, sunglasses and plenty of sunblock. Beware of the sun reflecting off the salt because if you are wearing shorts it will burn your legs.
