Copacabana-Lago Titicaca- View from the top

by Chicha15

What a sight! the view from the very top of El Calvario is unlike anything i have seen so far! The hike takes about an hour and a half and what a hike it is. Prepare to be out of breath, no matter how slow you are going, the steep slopes take a toll on you and your knees! You may run across some sheep and a few locals, but i did not see too many tourists. It was actually nice to have the entire place almost to ourselves. When you arrive to the top of El Calvario you will see that the only vendor there is selling candles (for payers), there is no water! plan accordingly. There is no charge for accessing El Calvario and since ther is not much to purchase up top, i recommend that you dont bring money, the hike is a lonely one and though i felt safe with my partner, we ran accross some odd folks. I would say that the best view is enjoyed during the daytime, but i have heard that the night...

Rurrenabaque - Pampas and jungle tour a must!

by Chicha15

If you are planning a trip to Rurrenabaque to do a pampas and jungle tour take note! traveling to this area during rainy season (nov-Feb) is not really recommended (too much rain and you could risk not going, or overstaying). I had a whole trip planned and was dissapointed when we heard we would not be going on the day planned because of the rain. There are 2 ways to get to Rurre, by plane and by bus. The plane ride is 45 mins and the bus ride is 18hrs. If you choose the plane you should know that there are 2 airlines that go there, Amaszonas and T.A.M.. T.A.M. is not heavily advertised by the touring companies because its a big cargo plane operated by the military and it only flies MWF, depending on the weather. It appeared to me though that T.A.M. is able to handle a bit of rain better than Amaszonas, so i dont hesitate to recommend it, its also cheaper. If you have the time, i highly...

A walk around La Paz

by lemondrop

La Paz is the type of city thats great for exploring on foot. The views all around are breathtaking as the city sits in a canyon, surrounded on all sides by fantastic snow capped mountains. For this reason, some refer to La Paz as "The Bowl". The streets are like wandering through an outdoor market, and it's a joy to simply wander about and see what's on offer. A good place to start is the Plaza San Francisco. There's good people watching and photo ops for us camera freaks. Take a walk up Sagarnaga street along the side of the plaza and check out the hilly market area here. Take it easy walking up some of the steep streets around here...remember you're at around 11,500 ft. above sea level.

Tiahuanacu, a bustling city

by kzapanta

Why would anyone not visit the town of Tiahuanacu? It is the site of one of the most relevent archiological finds in Bolivia. The Bolivian president was born there. There are so many minibuses going to La Paz from there. But non going back to Peru. Theres this cool architecture of a hanging boulder on the main intersection of the highway. There's these cool adobe houses without a roof. (special contribution by Patrick)Honesly, its a dump. Just got dropped off there because Copacabanna's border and city was closed completely. So that's the relevent fact on this tip. Make sure in advance the area you wanted to go is open!

Visit Potosi

by Chicha15

Potosi is very rich in history and was once one of the riches places in the world... a long, long time ago. Potosi's wealth came from its silver mines which sadly enough was also responsible for their slavery. If you are visiting Potosi, you will for sure visit "La Casa De La Moneda" (the mint) but I highly recommend that you take a tour of the mines (to get the full effect and quite an unforgetable experience). Its said that with all the silver mined from El Cerro Rico, one could build a silver bridge from Potosi to Spain....but it is also said, that one could build two bridges (from Potosi to Spain and back) with the bones of the slaves that worked in the mines and the mint...

Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna Reserve

by lombock

The reserve, located in the south west of Bolivia (province of Sud Lipez), presents impressive landscapes: large plains, volcanos, lagoons, geysers... in short, a whole world to explore and admire. The Reserve has an area of over 700,000 hectares and is at an average altitude of 4,000 meters above sea level. Its climate varies according to the season of the year: winter (May through August) is dry, while the summer season (December through April) has abundant rainfall. The Bolivian high plateau harbors over 45 bird species, among which three are flamingoes: the Andean flamingo, the Chilean flamingo and the Puna Flamingo, that have become the main attraction here. The volcanic origin of the Reserve is a compelling reason to explore all its surprising and spectacular attractions: the green and red lagoons, the hot water springs, the Salvador Dali desert, the geysers, the volcanos, the stone...

Copacabana..a nice town

by lemondrop

Copacabana is worth at least a couple of nights stay. It's a perfect base for exploring Lake Titicaca. Boats depart here for Isla del Sol and Isla de Luna. There is a nice church with adjacent plaza to check out.The trucha (Lake Titicaca trout) is worth the trip here alone. Watching the sunset along the beach (or up on Cerro Calvario hill nearby) should not be missed.

Mercado de Hechiceria (Witches Market)

by lemondrop

This street market is on every visitor to Lapaz's intinerary. The Aymara women sell their talisman, mystical medicines, protective charms, and herbs along the side of the street. It's fun to walk around and have a look at the strange things for sale. The most eye catching are definitely the dried llama fetuses. You can find some very bizarre souvenirs here. The women generally don't like to be photographed. You can butter them up for a photo if you buy something from them first.

Walking up Cerro Calvario (Copacabana)

by lemondrop

This is a religious site atop a hill that rises above the town of Copacabana. It's a steep 20 minute walk. Along the way, people have tables set up selling various religious objects. Best time to walk up is late afternoon to catch the sunset over Lake Titicaca. Up top, some locals sell drinks and some knick knacks. Make sure you bring a flashlight for your way down in the dark.

Island in the Salt Plain

by AlbuqRay

Incahuasi (sometimes mistakenly called Isla de Pescado or Fish Island) is in the middle of the world's largest salt plain. It has huge cacti that only grow one centimeter a year, so they are very old. A hiking trail circles the small island. The rocks are covered with fossiled algae and are sharp like lava rock. You must pay a fee (8 Bs) before you start your walk. See also my Salar de Uyuni travelogue.
