Picturesque Copacabana and Lake Titicaca

by AlbuqRay

Copacabana is a small town of ~55,000 people in a beautiful location between two mountains on the shore of Lake Titicaca. It is in Bolivia but on a peninsula that is connected only to Peru. To reach it from Bolivia, you must take a ferry across the Estrecho de Tiquina. Copacabana has many religious influences. Most people depart from here to go to Isla del Sol and its sacred Inca sites. The "Moorish Cathedral" in Copacabana is the home of the "Dark Virgin," Camarin de la Virgen de Candelaria. It also has Cerro Calvario, which has the 14 Stations of the Cross up a small mountain. This picture shows Copacabana with Cerro Calvario on the right. Lake Titicaca is in the near background. The mountains behind the lake in the far background are in Peru. Magnificent and Magical Isla del Sol

by AlbuqRay

Located on the Bolivian side of Lago Titicaca, the Incas believed that Isla del Sol was where the white god, Viracocha, brought forth the sun and moon from the Rock of the Puma to light up the world. Today the Aymara Indians continue those beliefs and one can see the artifacts of that legend. The island is the largest in Lake Titicaca measuring 13 miles in length and 5 miles at its widest point. Except for the coldness of the clear water and the snowcapped peaks in the distance, you might think you were in the Mediterranean Sea.This picture is looking back toward Challapampa from the La Estancia area. You can see the beach of Bahia Pukhara on the right and Challapampa in the far background. The peak in between them is Cerro Khea Kkollu (3990 m). The national flower of Bolivia, Kantuta, is in the foreground. See also my separate travel pages on Isla del Sol.

Tiahuanaco Mysteries and Age

by AlbuqRay

There are some fascinating websites about Tiahuanaco's mysteries and age.Mystic Places - TiahuanacoTiahuanaco - Also TiwanakuThe article, "Tiahuanaco, Archaeoastronomy and Cataclysmic Myths" by Martin Gray under the first link is especially interesting. However, one should also read the counterresponse. This picture is a view of the east entrance of the Kalasasaya and the Monolito Ponce (framed in the doorway) from the east side of of the Templete Semisubterraneo. I had to wait quite a while to get a shot with no people. Some of the monoliths are named after their discoverers. The larger one inside the Templete Semisubterraneo in the foreground is one of the oldest. It is made of red sandstone and is called Estela Barbada because it appears to have a beard. The Megalito Bennetto Pachamama (now inside the new museum) was originally found in the Templete Semisubterraneo. See also my...

Fabled Mountain of Silver

by AlbuqRay

Potosi was one of the largest, richest cities in the world in the 1600's, all because of Cerro Rico. It was a mountain rich with silver and tin, standing 5165 m then but now is 4830 m due to centuries of mining. The legend says the riches were discovered when a shepherd built a campfire one night and liquid silver ran out from under it. Now silver and tin are hard to find. Although the legacy of colonial architecture remains, so do polluted rivers, barren slopes and miners struggling to make a living. See also my travelogue, It Was One of the World's Great Cities, and my travel tips on Potosi.

Laguna Colorado

by AlbuqRay

Laguna Colorado is a spectacular sight at 4278 m. (14,035 ft.) elevation. It is a large lake with clear blue and cloudy red water lapping on white borax shores. The color is from red algae. You are certain to see the rare James flamingo there. The flamingos seem to prefer the water where some large springs run into the lake from a lava rock hill. It's a good walk from the Colque shelter to the hill, which is a good lookout point. You must cross an inlet using stepping stones, so be careful. Be warned that it can be very windy and cold at Laguna Colorado. Take cold weather gear with you. You will be there at the end of the day and the temperature will drop dramatically as the sun goes down.Colque Tours has a rough shelter at Laguna Colorado...three bunk beds to a room, no running water and a not so good banos (see my Not for the Fastidious tip). It was so cold and windy that my sleeping...

Sucre- Visit Kal Orca, see the oldest dino tracks

by Chicha15

In the past few years a new and exciting discovery has been made in Sucre...Dinosaur Tracks... the oldest most preserved and continuous tracks in the world! its hard to believe but because of the tectonic plate movements the tracks that were once on the ground are now upright. Layers upon layers of tracks are still being discovered, the sad part is that they are very hard to preserve and with each passing day the tracks are lost little by little despite all the best efforts. You may want to hurry there to get a good view before they are gone!

Visit Copacabana

by Chicha15

There are buses to Copacabana that leave daily from calle 16 de julio along plaza sucre. The ticket price does not include the ferry ride you must take to get there. This will be an extra .25 cents. Copacabana is a small but charming town. The church that sits in the middle of the town is a sight to see!

Copacabana- Visit La Isla del Sol

by Chicha15

If you are planning on visiting Copacabana make sure you plan to stay a few days (maybe 3). The town itself is not too big, but one of the main attractions, La Isla del Sol, is about 1 1/2 hrs boat ride. This would not be such a big deal except that there are only 2 trips per day. If you get the early boat at 8am you can tour the island longer, but my guess is that when you get there, you'll want to stay the night! at least to see the sun set! The rates for the hotels on the island vary but plan ahead as room is limited. For rooms check out the Hunter Travel Guides, Vivien Lougheed. I used this book and found it very helpful! (I was in a tight schedule or i would have stayed) If you decide to take the later trip at 12 noon, you will only have an hour to tour the island:( not enough time at all.Bring sunscreen! i cant stress this enough, you may not feel the heat but your skin will pay a...

Potosi- Take a tour inside the mines!

by Chicha15

I had a great experience with the tour company Koala, I highly recommend it and if you can, ask for Efrain as your tour guide ( he is an ex miner). Make sure that if you are a young adventourist that you are paired up with a similar group. I had a group of about 6, all young guys. The tour is not easy, its cold at first but then it quickly gets hot! it is very hard to breath and at times you are crawling on your belly and going down ricketie ladders! see why you would want a young active crew!? The tour takes about 5 hours with 2 different stops before actually going into the mines. At the first stop, it is customary to buy gifts, including dynamite and coca leafs for the miners! The second stop is a tour through the processing plants and then finally the mines. I dont want to write too much, i would hate to spoil the experience. Best advice i can give you is; dont bring a big day bag...
