In the pampa, they don't make a difference between the local guy and the gringo... They bite !!! We saw frightening backs, legs or arms of travelers, with loads of red bites...
So, I will give you three good pieces of advice :
    - never lie on a hammock in the pampa (they bite through the hammock)
    - never accept to sleep under a mosquito net with holes
    - buy a really efficient repellent...

    Fake police!

  • We were in Oruro coming back on a train from Uyuni when we took a cab(just like every other time), and the cab driver starts going the wrong way, and then he picks up another passenger who claimed he just got off the train. This was half a block down the road from the train station. Well then he turned left and the passenger(he got in the front seat) got into the back seat so the under cover cop could get in the front. He showed us his badge and demanded to see our passports. That is fine, but then he started to demand to go through our day packs for fake Credit Cards, Travellers checks, and money. My boyfriend then demanded to go to the police station, but the (fake) policeman just started yelling, and told me to be quiet, but we did not let up so eventually the driver let us out.

just watch out for anyone who is demanding to see fake anything. Do what we did, and demand to be taken to the police station.

  • rompimulellas (shock-absorbers breakers) are the grown up version of those little hills police put on roads to make drivers slow down. Rompimuellas can be really high and steep and they can really break your springs... I've also heard someone calling them dead policemen.

  • that's simple... 20 bolivianos and I'll let you go. We were stopped by police quite a few times and most of times the result was something to pay:
we where asked some imaginary document or stamp or something we couldn't have in order to trade a bribe to go.
our documents were registered on a loose sheet of paper in order to make us pay 10 bolivianos for registration.
we were directely asked for 50 bolivianos each to get the exit stamp on our papers.
The best one was the man in paillon when we where carrying the broken bike to santacruz on a cart. first we were asked for the permission to carry a bike on a cart(?) when he got probably aware that such a law was a bit too fancy even for tourists so we were asked for the exit date on our passport... well how can we possible have the exit date if we're still in is quite a mistery so we were asked for the date of the "supposed exit"... OK...
    - they didn't put the supposed exit date in tambo quemado, how can we solve this problem?-
    - I can't put the date, I can only check the date -
-so what can we do? -
    -I don't know, I can only check -
we had plenty of time as we were waiting for the horrific bridge to open so this acting went on quite a while.
just a minute before the bridge opening we finally got to the point. Riccardo handed him the "usual" 20 bolivianos...
-not enough, we're three here.. es legal!.-
we were told that this behaviour, called ley 20, is quite common and mainly due to the really low wages of the policemen who try to make their living imposing their own taxes on wealthy appearing ones.

    Altitude sickness

  • If you are flying into Lapaz, there is one thing you need to be warned about. The airport is at over 13,000 feet where the air is thin. This can cause headache, dizzyness, shortness of breath, or in worse cases, nausea and vomiting. You will probabaly notice and least a slight headache and some heavier than normal breathing as you get off the plane. The Bolivians believe that soroche (altitude sickness) is relieved by coca tea, which can be found almost anywhere and is very good. From personal experience, it does seem to make you feel better.

Often you can see that others didnīt drive that carefully..............

it is also said that the most dangerous street of the world is in Bolivia too. It is the old street from la Paz down to Coroico. Nevertheless you see in numerous ways that corss the mountains of Bolivia crosses that symbolizes where people died, mostly because of accidents probably caused by old cars, busses, trucks and bad educated drivers....as also because of often bad street conditions.
Fortunately the main connections are meanwhile quite well maintained, there are a lot of new highways in Bolivia.

Two blocks down the street of the Central Bus station is a very busty intersection. Here you wil find many con artists. People with governmental identification papers (false ones) will stop you and ask you for identification, such as passports etc. By the time that they are trough intimidating you your money is gone, so be careful. It has happened to me a number of times in different parts of the world and maybe I look like a real easy target, but just be carefull.

Climate! Bolivia has an incredibly diverse climate. Due to the different altitude of different parts of Bolivia, the weather is completely different. It may be hot and sunny while you bathe in a tropical lagoon in Santa Cruz, and snowing while you hike the magnificent Andes in La Paz. Places like La Paz, Potosi and Oruro are cold and dry most of the year. Santa Cruz, Pando, Beni and Yungas are tropical to subtropical. El Chaco (south of Santa Cruz) is hot and dry. Tarija, Sucre, Samaipata and Cochabamba have temperate and dry weather. So bring appropriated clothing. Be aware that from May to August Santa Cruz has cold windy storms that are totally unexpected.

  • Bus travel is extremely dangerous. Bolivian roads are some of the worst in the Americas and multiple fatality accidents are common. Bus drivers are frequetly intoxicated. Many of the dirt roads run along mountain sides and are only wide enough for one vehicle. Break downs are frequent and buses are filled to capacity. Having said that, I made it across Bolivia without incident and had an unforgetable time despite the chronic backaches smothering dust and whining livestock. It seems to be a game of odds, and it is just up to you on whether you are willing to gamble with your safety. However, there are a few tips I can give that will make it a 'little safer'. 1. Travel only during the day. 2.Make sure your driver is not drunk. If he is, wait for another bus if possible. 3.Do whatever possible to get a seat. 4. Avoid the road out of La Paz heading to the lowlands. You are better off flying that route. The road drops 3000meters in about only 20 miles and bus plunges are so common its scary....Despite Bolivia's reputation as a dangerous place, crime is not as much of a concern as in neighboring countries. Petty theft can be a major problem in the larger cities, but for the most part violent crime is uncommon. The coca growing regions between Cochabamba and Santa Cruz are sometimes the site of conflicts and roadblocks, but it is not a major problem. Guerilla and terrorist activity used to be a problem in the past but is now minimal. There are the rumors about police 'setting up' unsuspecting travelers. Just remeber that all they are looking for is a little dinero. Use common sense and you should have no problems in regards to crime in Bolivia. And for some reason, I can never stress this enough- stay away from the drugs! Chewing coca is legal. Sniffing cocaine is not!
