La Paz: do you have a VISA to go in/out?

by jakiline

EMIGRACION: it may have changed since the 80s...I wasn't told I needed a visa to be allowed to go out of Peru into Bolivia, and vice versa: I was put in jail! They showed me a pile of passports on the desk (young people from Europe) and sorry I didn't take any picture.I could save my life because I knew a few words of QUECHUA, the peruvian local language, and had an honest conversation with the lieutenant who let me out of Bolivia safely back to Peru.

the Altitude

by pepples46

the Altitude can be very dangerous.Oxygene, transported by the red bloodcell, is not so ready available for people who lived all they're Life below 1000m..when in La Paz on 3660m or 1200ft..take it easy, give or take a week..blood 'thin's' out..alias, one get more red bloodcell's..more Oxygen can be transported! I hope it makes sense!!

dangerous streets, old cars, bad drivers

by chancay

Often you can see that others didn´t drive that carefully..............it is also said that the most dangerous street of the world is in Bolivia too. It is the old street from la Paz down to Coroico. Nevertheless you see in numerous ways that corss the mountains of Bolivia crosses that symbolizes where people died, mostly because of accidents probably caused by old cars, busses, trucks and bad educated drivers....as also because of often bad street conditions. Fortunately the main connections are meanwhile quite well maintained, there are a lot of new highways in Bolivia.

Altittude

by boasnovas

Arriving in La Paz by plane can make you feel sick because of the sudden altittude change...headache, dizzness, etc. A good idea is drinking coca leaves tea. They serve even at the hotel and you fell imediatly better.

Road closures and protests

by K1W1

Due to the pressures put on the Bolivian people (usually as a consequence of the US pressures on their Govt which adversely affect their lives), there are possibilities that your trip with have some delays. This was the result of a 20 day strike by the campisinos (peasant farmers) and it had the effect of crippling the country and closing the borders during that time. All roads were impassable. I had to walk across the border and the following 9kms into the closest town of Copacabana on the shores of Lake Titicaca, and stay there until the strike was over and the roads cleared. As it turned out, that wasn't a hardship as without the tourists coming and going, the town was peaceful and very pleasant.

Fake Undercover Police

by msforbes

........And they are EVERYWHERE, and they have many ways to approach you. Often someone befriends you, it could be a fellow traveller (who does a very good job at convincing you that this whole routine is perfectly normal). Once it was a wierdo who sat beside me on a park bench, then the fake police came up to me and asked me if the man was bothering me, then he flashed his badge. They also work in cahoots with taxi drivers. Think about it, are undercover police payed to chase around tourist who may have counterfit notes, or drugs, or may of overstayed thier visa? When you feel that you are being set up, keep walking, they want you to stop, it's part of thier trap. They could have others in the background watching everything so it's best to get away from them. If this cop asks to see your passport (which they won't give back until they have taken everything they can from you) or check you...

Tale of Four Women continued

by AlbuqRay

It is downhill from the Hotel Rosario going to Plaza San Francisco but steep uphill coming back. Since the altitude is around 12,000 feet, it is better to rest at least the first half day in La Paz. Even better yet, take a tour down the valley to lower elevation (see my general tip). They were shopping in the Plaza San Francisco area (there are many sidewalk vendors there) but evidently not staying together. Someone threw yellow mustard on Rene. They said it was from a bird and offered to help clean it off. It was just a way to distract her. She took off her knapsack and put it between her feet; however, she was distracted enough that in a moment it and the people were gone. The knapsack had her passport, cash, credit cards and travelers' checks in it. She said it happened so fast you would not believe it.When I met them, they were just back from this bad experience during their first...

Tale of Four Women from San Francisco, CA

by AlbuqRay

This is the story of four women from San Francisco, California, as related to me in the Anyi Room (a place to share) of the Hotel Rosario in La Paz. These young women were not novice travelers, so it could have happened to anyone. It was not a good start to their trip but they had a good attitude and were supporting each other. I left early the next morning and have always wondered how the rest of their trip went.It started at the airport. I did not see them but they were on the same flight as me from Miami. I did not know her at the time, but Angela was a couple of people in front of me in the immigration line. Clearly she was happy and excited to be in La Paz. By the time I got my luggage, I noticed she was in the small infirmary getting oxygen for soroche (altitude sickness) and not feeling good at all. Unfortunately she had a pretty bad case.To give you an idea of how individual...
