Ilheus, the small coastal city
Fondest memory: Ilhéus is a coastal city in the Brazilian state of Bahia, just south of the city Salvador. It's a beautiful place with beaches and tropical weather. Not too many foreign tourists find their way to this place as it is too far away the major airports in the country. The domestic airlines in Brazil fly to Eduardo Gomes Airport (IOS) from Salvador and Rio de Janeiro.

READ BOOKS BY BRAZILIAN WRITERS
Favorite thing: There are several good Brazilian novelists, many of their books are translated into English.
Paulo Coelho is the new-age novelist, famous for 'The Alchemist' and 'The Pilgrimage'.
Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis was regarded as Brazil’s greatest writer. His books include 'Quincas Borba', 'The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas' and 'Dom Casmurro'.
I found a Jorge Amado book 'Dona Flor and her Two Husbands' and enjoyed the amorous and amoral tale tremendously. His other acclaimed novel is 'Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon'. Jorge Amado was from Ilheus (there is a road named after him). He wrote interesting and amusing romances about the Bahians set in plantations and Bahian villages.
Others include Joao Guimaraes Rosa, Gilberto Freyre, Manuel Antônio de Almeida, José de Alencar, etc...
Please note that English books, especially translated ones from Brazilian authors, are hard to find. I found 'Dona Flor and her Two Husbands' in Rio de Janeiro in a bookshop (3rd floor or something) at Rio Sul Shopping Mall, near to the Sugarloaf Mountain, after a whole day of hunting.
