Sheik: The Best Fresh Seafood in Town!
  • Tip Rating:

Sheik is the best restaurant in Ilheus! Is situated at the very top of the hill overlooking the sea. Great fresh seafood is served and great service too. When arriving at Sheik, you must ask to be served by Meire a lovely Baiana girl that works in the restaurant for over 15 years. The tables are overlooking the sea and you can relax and feel the sea breeze while waiting for your wonderful meal.

    Muqueca de peixe!

'Gabriela Cravo e Canela' and 'Sabor de Ilheus': Two Bargain Restaurants
  • Satisfaction:
  • Hotel and 'Gabriela' Restaurant - Ilhéus

    + Gabriela Cravo e Canela

The restaurant is located in the Ilh?us Praia Hotel. It offers hotel guests a complimentary buffet breakfast.

For lunch and dinner the restaurant operates separately from the hotel (guests cannot even charge their meals to their rooms) and is open to the public.

    + Sabor de Ilheus

This new (July 2003) restaurant abuts Bar Vesuvio. It is ultra clean. Its menu is similar to Vesuvio's, but the food is better -- and cheaper.

    + Gabriela Cravo e Canela

The lunch and dinner buffets include a dozen or more dishes -- meat, fish, and fowl as well as the inevitable spaghetti -- paid for by weight and at absurdly low prices. None of my three meals, heaping plates all, cost more than R$6,25 (about US$2.20).

    + Sabor de Ilheus

The Peixe do Moqueca (fish stew Bahian style) was as good as I've had anywhere. It cost R$20 (just under US$7) and would easily have fed two or three people.

  • Address: Both are on Praca Dom Eduardo.
  • Directions: In the picture of the hotel, the main entrance to the 'Gabriela' restaurant is just to the right of the telephone pole. The hotel's pool is behind the wall. The chalet-type building behind the minivan is a kiosk selling chocolate delicacies.

    Vesuvio: Gabriela Worked Here
  • Satisfaction:
  • In the novel, Gabriela is hired as a cook by the Vesuvio's owner, 'Nacib the Arab' (Nacib Aschar Saad). They become lovers and everything about her life pleases Gabriela. Fearful of losing her, Nacib persuades her to marry him; the demands of respectability make Gabriela desperately unhappy and she puts horns on Nacib; he gets their marriage annulled, they get back together as lovers, and she is happy again.

The modern-day Vesuvio features about a dozen tables inside and a score or more on the patio -- half of them under an awning.

The place is highly popular with locals and often crowded.

The menu is extensive, featuring everything from snacks and hamburgers to elaborate fish plates.

Shrimp (camarao), prepared several ways, is the house speciality. The moqueca de camarao is good, not great. As seems to be true everywhere in Brazil, one order is enough to feed half the Russian army.
