Barravento: Nice View!
This restaurant, with a sail-shaped roof, is one of the most popular in Salvador, and is frequented by locals and tourists alike. They serve a wide variety of Bahain dishes. We ate outside overlooking the water and beach.Barravento's beach patio overlooks all of the beach as far as the Farol da Barra.
Favorite Dish: The abara was heavenly... I also had some kinda fish that was good too!

Barravento: Great beach atmosphere
The patio is covered by a cool, sail-like roof and overlooks the beach with a view all the way to the lighthouse at the end of the sand. Since the weather wasn't the greatest, I decided to eat inside where there are still large floor to ceiling windows that allow you to look out at the view.
Favorite Dish: I ordered Moqueca de Siri Mole which is a typical dish of Bahia. Moqueca is basically an African-inspired seafood stew. In Bahia they cook with dende oil, which has a distinctive and rich taste and I enjoyed the hotter spices that gave the food a great flavor. The moqueca, however, seemed to skimp on the meat. The bits and pieces of seafood seemed to be all the throwaway bits and it was hard to find chunks of meat. I crunched my way through all sorts of legs and shells, but the flavor was so good, I didn't mind too much.

While in Salvador again after 8 years of absence in October 2010 this restaurant was MY place.... !
Not only because of its proximity to our hotel ( I also ate in other, even distant places ) but the food was sooo tasty that I will even make a double tip for Barravento, just so I can present more of the goodies I had here...
I'm a sea food freak and will taste anything edible that comes from the ocean.... Some of the things I swallowed here I had never heard of before...... and I don't mind what it looks like as long as it's tasty and THIS I garantee you.
Casual ambience, right on the beach with in- and outdoor seating, good and friendly service, what else do I need ?
Favorite Dish: Here's what we had the first time we ate there.......
Pic # 2 shows the starter, sorry, forgot what it's called, will ask and later add..... This is a whole bunch of miniscule fish, stir fried in some kind of batter and you eat the whole thing with head and tail, it's crunchy in the mouth and heaven's bliss. Careful though because it will fill you quickly and make you not be able to finish your main dish.....
The other pictures show the Moqueca de Frutos do Mar, basically a stew of fresh steamed seafood including fish, shrimps, mussles, octopus and squid, lots of spices, some ingredients like tomatoes and onions and especially, typical for the Brazilian Northeast, palm oil which gives the plate a very special and delicious flavor....
As said before, we couldn't finish the main dish, not only because of the starter fishies but mainly because they simply serve too much for two normal people to eat.... And that's the pity because I hate to waste food and this is not the kind of plate you can take back to the hotel in a doggy bag.... What a real pity....
Danielle and I don't drink alcoholic beverages, so we indulge in freshly squeezed fruit juices, mainly orange and pineapple with hortelã ( sorry, can´t think of the english word, it´s some green stuff similar to mint, will also check later and correct ).
All in all a superb and very satisfying dinner.....

Barravento: Don't forget the chopp
Barravento calls itself a restaurante & chopperia, so don't forget the chopp. I ordered a chopp (draft beer) and bottle of Antarctica beer to accompany my spicy meal and both were decent (hey, you don't go to Brazil for the beer!).

This is, as announced before, the second sea food tip for the phantastic Barravento restaurant which I thoroughly enjoyed.
This time around we're having lunch at 4:00PM, I'm not really hungry but with a tremendous appetite, so I order the 2 cheapest seafood items on the menu because all I really want is a good snack and this I got....
Favorite Dish: First the absolutely out of this world delicious "Caldo de Sururu", a typical northeastern soup that always comes in small amounts because it's heavy business.....
I have no idea how it's prepared but it's basically the reduced and intensive broth left over from boiling the fish, they add some starch, I believe and lots of spices and I always ordered it with toasted bread and the special mayo sauce of the house which they serve with a variety of sea food dishes.
Well, while in Salvador I became a sururu junkie... If I didn't have at least one per day I got the "cold turkey".... Price for the "daily dose" U$ 4.50
Next came a plate of lambreta mussles, much cheaper than the black long ones that every sea food connoisseur likes.... I was intrigued to see how cheap they were like U$ 7 and tried to figure out with the waiter what exactly they were and why so cheap.... He said these were very common easily found and retrieved mussles that usually are not given too much appreciation to by the patrons....
What ??? Did I hear right ??
They were a whole new experience of their own, no exageration, they were deliciosos !!!
