by Subria The airport of Salvador da Bahia has mainly domestic flights but also a few international departures, for example TAP daily to Lisbon or Condor weekly to Frankfurt. For flights within Brazil you can use Varig, TAM or the Low Cost Carrier GOL. From the airport to the city center you have three options, taking a taxi is the fastest but also the most expensive. To save money take the executivo bus to Praca de Se or a local bus. Theme: Airplane

by acemj From the airport, which is located 20 miles from downtown, you can take a cab which will run you about 55 reais if you use the Comtas company which has booths at baggage claim. You pay (credit cards are accepted) at the Comtas desk and take the voucher out to the cabs. I paid 67 reais for the round trip fare, which obviously saved some money (about $12 US each way), but you can save even more by skipping the Comtas booth altogether and just hailing your own cab at the airport. I rode in plenty of cabs and talked with many drivers here and would have felt completely comfortable with any of them driving me to the airport. In other words, don't do what I did! Skip the Comtas booth at the airport and just walk out front and grab a cab. Ask the driver how much it will be and if it's more than 30 reais, ask him if he'll take you for 30. I bet he will. by acemj Just behind the Catedral Basilica, you'll find this tram that will take you down to the lower town. I believe it was 1.50 reais and it takes about 3 minutes, so it definitely beats walking. However, it doesn't beat the Elevator Lacerdo which is even cheaper and provides better views. ***update*** oops, thanks to VTer Kittlelite who told me that the Plano Inclinado costs the same as the Elevator Lacerdo at the bargain of only 5 centavos!! Thanks, Kittlelite! Leave a Comment Theme: Other

View from the Lacerta Elevator by Kittelite Sundays, and evenings, it can be rather frustrating waiting for a bus to arrive at the Ponto Da Barra busstop. So if you are heading for a location near the center, or Pelourino, Do jump in if a taxidriver offers 3-4 persons a ride for 2 R$ pr person! It is a common practise, the locals do it all the time to save time, and if the car is not full, or somebody gets of on the way, he will just check on the next busstop, or continue to where you agreed. He will not raise the price. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

by andal13 Not always there are ports at the islands, and not always the ships can approach to the coast, so put your handbag over your head, and begin to walk through the water! No siempre hay puertos en las islas, y no siempre las embarcaciones se pueden aproximar a la costa, así que ponte tu bolso sobre la cabeza, y comienza a caminar por el agua! Good Security in Pelourinho by coconutwireless Salvador airport into town you can go by : taxi, executivo, or city bus. Taxi, of course, is the most expensive, about $18 -20 US$ when we were there in Jan 04. The Executivo Bus was about R$2.70. it is a mini bus and can be caught right outside the airport . The end-of-the-line for the executivo is Praca da Se, at the entrance to Pelourinho, the old colonial city center. The fare for the executivo bus is either be collected along the way by a fare-collector, or collected by the bus-driver when you get off. Best to have small change. tip: there is a place for luggage in the back underneath the bus. You might have to let the driver know yu are aware of this or else you get on with your luggage and have to try and lift it over the turnstile (like they use in the metros) and make a complete idiot of yourself in the process (like we did). If you know where you are staying you can take a short taxi ride from the Praca de Se where the bus lets you off and you will save yourself a bundle of money. We arrived at dark and found this worked well. You can reverse the trip but leave yourself a good hour when going to the airport. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

If you plan to go to the island of Itaparica, i recommend to go to Mar Grande. As i see it this island is overexposed, and less than interresting! Many talk about those beautiful beaches and the fantastic waters, but i think they are quite muddy, and the water is unclear. The restaurants are expensive, and all places but Mar Grande seem desserted. Even the main town is desserted....Spookey!!! Anyway i recommend the trip back and forth, with the little boat, that you catch from the habour behind Mercado Modelo Down Town. The ticket cost around 4-5 R$ each way, and i would take the tour just to enjoy the views. You can buy drinks onboard, and it is often a boat full of happyholliday guests.
