Inside the market by sunlovey The Mercado Modelo is bulging at the seams with tourists, vendors, scents, sights and sounds. If you enter through the side closest to the water you'll see a vast cafe type area with a stage often occupied by people practicing capoeira. Sit down and have a bite to eat here or a cold beer if you'd like. The capoeira performers expect tips. Pass through this area into the building and you'll encounter vendor after vendor all ready to start negotiating prices on their goods with you.
Jewelry, instruments, clothing, music, handicrafts, gems... Be sure to negotiate prices! I talked a vendor down from $210 REAL to $100 REAL on a really beautiful beaded and embroidered tunic.
It's up to you... things can be dirt cheap or you can spend loads... Leave a Comment Theme: Local CraftDirections: Located really close to the base of the elevator.

by acemj This mall was a convenient place for me to stop and check out shopping, Salvador style. It's a modern mall with some interesting Brazilian shops that I had never heard of before. On the whole, the clothing seems to be a very high quality here and prices are a lot better than in the States. Leave a Comment Theme: OtherAddress: Av. I came across this shop while strolling the streets of Barra. It was actually one of my first days in a big city after almost a month that I spent in the north. I intended to buy present for my friend who is a great vinyl record collector and just loves Brazilian music. It seemed a perfect place at the right moment.
When I came into the shop I was pleasantly surprised. The heaps of vinyl records (LPs and singles) were everywhere: on the shelves, on the floor and even on the counter. The choice was really good. I kept asking the owner about the particular authors and musicians. When he found I was quite a serious shopper, he brought several albums with special collections of rare things and tried to explain about some musicians and styles that were new for me. All LPs and singles were second hand and most of them in a decent condition. I bought some singles with Brazilian music from the 60s and 70s, some early recordings of Chico Buarque de Hollanda, Jorge Ben Jor, Elizeth Cardoso and others. The owner gave me a good discount since I bought quite a lot :)
I paid 5 - 10 euros for a single Theme: MusicAddress: Rua Marques de Caravelas, 609, loja 8Phone: +55 71 8873 5233Directions: BarraOther Contact: ask for Walter

Mercado Modelo inside by Frann Mercado Modelo is the biggest handcraft center in Latin America. The building here it works used to be a storage center. Besides the shops there are two restaurants and a couple of bars there. Some years ago tunnel were found in its subsoil. They were used as a refuge during foreing invasions centuries ago.
Here you find products made of seashells, clay, stone and wood, as clothes and shoes.
It varies according to the product you buy, but sellers tend to rise the price when they realize they?re dealing with tourists. Leave a Comment Theme: ArtDirections: Downtown

by acemj If you walk down the hill from Pelourinho on the side away from the bay, you'll run into this street. There are plenty of clothing shops here as well as electronics and many other things. Very few of the stores are geared toward the tourists, but when they saw me pull out my camera, all of the shopkeepers seemed eager to attract me to their stores. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Fitinhas do Bonfim..a good souvenir from Bahia by mangueirense There is an absolutely "must to bring"souvenir you should bring home from Bahia to your friends and family: the "Fitinhas" from Salvadors most famous church, the Bonfim church. The legend says, that if you give one of them to a friend or beloved one he will have three wishes free and if the "fitinha" fall down automatically (and you did not told your wishes to someone else) your wishes will come true. For that you have to put the "Fitinha" around your arm and shut three times, one for each wish you have.
They are really cheap, you can buy a bunch of ten or more and pay around 5 brazilian Reais. Leave a Comment Theme: OtherDirections: You can buy those "Fitinhas" around Bonfim church, in Pelourinho, Mercado Modelo or probably somewhere at the street or the beach.

Musical instruments are on display and for sale all over Pelourinho and in the Mercado Modelo. Above all we find traditional percussion instruments, like berimbaus, abataques, bongos, timbaus, cuicas, congas, djembes and more. If you shop around you can find some pieces of great beauty and quality made by local craftsmen. One of the places which is much more than a cut-above is Mestre Lua's Atelier Percussivo in Pelourinho. Mestre Lua is a capoeira master who crafts percussion instruments of great beauty and quality. His shop is located at Rua Inacio Ociole, no. 3 (close to the Igreja Sao Francisco), and the interior looks like something of a living museum. The diference is that these instruments are made to play. They are also pricier, but still far less expensive than anything similar purchased in Europe. The telephone number of the shop is 3488 3600 and Mestre Lua's home phone is 3636 8118. He also organizes percussion classes and workshops.

For those, interested in art works, expecially the paintings, Salvador is certainly the place! In Pelourinho there are several art studios where you can observe local artists while creating their pieces of art. You also find numerous shops and small galleries selling paintings and other works of art. Some of them have really fantastic collections and are worth visiting at least for having a look.
