Things to Do

Snorkel

Snorkel, Maragogi

solopes Says:  It's the best way to watch the fish, and easy and safe to practice in Maragogi. You may rent an equipment (fins are forbidden in the reef) at the restaurant by R5, and take it with you in the boat, to deliver back in the beach. Just remember one thing: you are amused...

Natural Pools

Natural Pools, Maragogi

solopes Says:  The big highlight of Maragogi is its natural pools. Far from the coast, they provide a very large area of shallow water, punctuated with reefs, where you can dive, snorkel, bath, or only walk around watching the fish and people's happiness. Not to be missed, with caution...

Use the integrated service

Use the integrated service, Maragogi

solopes Says:  As long as we arrive at the beach, a restaurant offers its services, covering everything. You may, as we did, reserve your table to lunch in your way back from the pools, choose the menu to have the food ready as soon as you come, and get a ticket to the catamaran operated...

Enjoy the beach

Enjoy the beach, Maragogi

solopes Says:  A long, wide, calm warm beach matches anybody dreams. It's safe, it's easy to find some lonely spots under the coconut's shade, as seen in most travelling brochures, or you may prefer an umbrella with gentle service right by the water. What else can we demand in a beach?...

Agricultural Settlement Becomes Tourist Attraction

Agricultural Settlement Becomes Tourist Attraction, Maragogi

Brazilbum Says:  It is not often that an agrarian reform project becomes a tourist attraction. But, thanks to some adventurous peasants and their agricultural cooperative, Coopeagro, Maragogi, Alagoas has just such a combination. It is called the Visgueiro Tree - Ecological Trail in the...

Visiting other places!

Visiting other places!, Maragogi

Witinha Says:  We went to visit a "fazenda" (farm) with sugar-cane and passionfruit plantations. Then we enjoyed a small waterfall and even fead some little monkeys with bananas!

Visiting other places!

Visiting other places!, Maragogi

Witinha Says:  We stayed in Maragogi only a week. But we didn't stay all the time in the beach! We visited other beaches "made in paradise" and one "fazenda" in a "buggie" like this on the photo. Our driver - Jo?o - showed us landscapes we only used to see in travel magazines.

Street market at Maragogi

Street market at Maragogi, Maragogi

Witinha Says:  In our last day at Maragogi (Sunday) we went to visit the street market - about 1 km from the hotel. It's a traditional market, where the goods are exposed in the ground, such as fruit, vegetables and cereals. But once more, you feel great among the people. You have nothing...

Restaurants

Frutos do Mar: Tons of lobsters

Frutos do Mar: Tons of lobsters, Maragogi

solopes Says:  Would you believe that we payd for four lobsters less then in some other restaurants for a common meal? The integrated service of Frutos do Mar was perfect, except for one single detail: no wine. Lobster, of course.

Floating Stalls: Eating on the reef

Floating Stalls: Eating on the reef, Maragogi

solopes Says:  It's a funny spectacle, the sight of people dipped in water, several kilometres far from the coast, surrounding a couple of floating bars, supplying anything from grilled meat and fish to fruit and drinks. And everybody adheres to the party.

Pousada Barra Velha Restaurant: Hearty Home Cooking in Maragogi, AL

Pousada Barra Velha Restaurant: Hearty Home Cooking in Maragogi, AL, Maragogi

Brazilbum Says:  I never thought of recommending a local Pousada - inn - as a culinary delight. But, I am addicted to the hearty home cooked food at the Pousada Barra Velha at the northern most end of Maragogi Municipality. We haven't spent the night there, but have gone back for more food...

The top attraction of Maragogi are the natural pools, that, opposite to some other places in the area, stay quite far from the coast. The mainly used transport is a catamaran, easy to book in the beach.

It costs R30 per person, and provides a quick transportation to the pools, where it stays, waiting for the return and providing some assistance, with small but useful shadow.

Local Customs

Landless People

Landless People, Maragogi

solopes Says:  Sometimes we read in the news, the serious social problems in Brazil, caused by the existence of thousands of people without any mean of subsistence. They organized in very revendicative groups, and settled in precarious habitations, always in the side of important roads, to...

Local photos

Local photos, Maragogi

solopes Says:  Several boys will approach you in the pools, offering underwater photographs. It's expensive, with doubtful quality, but... fun. We dealt with Ivanildo who promised to take us 20 pictures (almost identical, but he did!) and add to the CD almost 200 of his other local photos....

Warnings and Dangers

Sun Burning

Sun Burning, Maragogi

solopes Says:  I use to say to Fernanda that, in the tropics, the sun is dangerous even in the room, at midnight! We always forget that moving here and there we are under the sun. Swimming, we are under the sun. Even staying in the shade, the reflection in the water... keeps burning. We...

Unexpected Rain

Unexpected Rain, Maragogi

solopes Says:  You are under an abrasive sun, and then, suddenly, the sky gets dark, a wind sweeps the beach and you are caught by a freezing and heavy rain. That's the tropics, and after some minutes everything is dry again, the sun shines and people gets back to laughing. We had it in...

I hesitated between posting this theme here or in the things to do, because we did it, and not repent. But I must alert that the quality is poor (I publish the best, after retouching them in my PC) and the price is high.

Anyway, they allow us to watch the CD in place, and that's a guarantee you must use before paying for it.

Sand Spít of Barra Grande - A Roadway!

Sand Spít of Barra Grande - A Roadway!, Maragogi

Brazilbum Says:  To the north of Maragogi´s Beach Front on the Barra Grande Beach which is about five kilometers from the city, a long sand spit is uncovered at low tide. This is especially worth seeing on the days around the full and the new moon. The beach buggies go way out into the...

Find Your Own Place on the Reef

Find Your Own Place on the Reef, Maragogi

Brazilbum Says:  Two times a month, the reefs off Maragogi become very special. This is at the low tides of the full and new moons. The day before and the day after comprise the best three day window in each case. There are places that you can walk out to the beach IF you have tennis or...

Favorite thing: Fernanda loves the beach, but recovering from the sun means... shopping around. In Europe all the resorts are prepared to Fernandas, but in Brazil, only Porto de Galinhas approached to her taste.

It was a superficial look, but Maragogi seemed a very small town with not many attractions when the sun goes down. Wrong? maybe, but that's what we saw and felt.
