    the Slave trail

    by pepples46 Updated Feb 2, 2006

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: these days more refered to as 'the royal trail'.....in the 17th through to the 18th century, Brasil had one of the biggest slave markets in the world, three and a halve a million 3 1/2 million, 2 times more then America imported. the country was build up in sweat and blood. 1804 when Independence from Portugal was declared, Minas Gerais with its richness of precious minerals, gold and diamonds contributed much for the good of the new independent country...Brasil

Fondest memory: in the mining places, first towns began to appear, Ouro Preto, Mariana, Sabara, Tiradentes, Diamantina...esquisite architecture, baroque minero, churches where build showing the richness of the country, pure gold choosen to decorate the interio....Ouro Preto to these days a fine example.

    Magnificent Art and Architecture

by NedHopkins Updated Apr 21, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Don't miss Ouro Preto or Congonhas. The churches — inside and out — are works of Baroque splendor and genius. The interior of Matriz de Nossa Senhora do Pilar is decorated with nearly 760 pounds (343kg) of gold.

Fondest memory: O Aleijadinho, 'The Little Cripple' (1730–1814), was the son of a Portugese architect and his African slave. In mid–life he was stricken with a disease that caused him to lose the use of his hands. His assistants tied hammer and chisel to his wrists so that he could sculpt. His masterpieces are in Congonhas: the 12 prophets in soapstone and the 66 figures in cedar. As an architect he designed some of the most beautiful churches in Minas Gerais. Aleijadinho ranks with the great masters of the Italian Renaissance.

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Before starting our trip to Santa Catarina,i'll add another miscellaneous thing that I did not find any other way to write about..(maybe i should on Rio's page but it's not exactly Rio,but in the state of Rio..).
Last may my brother, who is a crazy nautic sports fan, organized in Porto Alegre a team to go to a rafting adventure in PARAIBUNA RIVER..
This site is located between Rio and the state of Minas Gerais,5 km before the entrance of a small city called Tres Rios(3 rivers in a wild translation..).
The rafting consists of an instructor(a senior rafter, who knows the river moods very well..)and 9 rafters. Before the start,we had a briefing with the safety instructions..i have to say i enjoyed it but i'm not sure i would do it again..more pictures of the adventure in the travelogue..

Fondest memory: Do it only if you are sure of yourself..i wasn't!
