    Cities by the trail

Sao Joao Del Rei, like Ouro Preto, Tiradentes and all other Towns, build in the...Baroque Mineiro, the art of Aleijadinho and the cobblestones streets fittingly showing off the Towns wealthy coffers , Slaves had to build miles of miles in seering heat. it is documented, that over 3.5mill Slaves had set food on Brasil shores...and an ironic twist in that was, they all where christianed. the Portugues believed no soul should die without having the chance to go to heaven.

    Diamantina

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Cities and Towns along the Royal Trail, inviting to stay and exploring an architecture seldom being seen in other countries, similar perhaps, reminding of portugues influence, but unique in many ways and clever innovation like the Passage Building in Diamantina, later became the Mayor Office...Prefeitura.
Diamantina around 250 km northeast of Belo Horizonte

    Nova Lima

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

the Town I am very fond of. My best friend lived and worked here in a Volunteer Project, teaching weaving and batic, building an Artschool which exsist and functioned till today.
Nova Lima, in the early days of the Bandeirantes and colonisation, they called the Town... Ribeiro do Campo....1923 it was renamed Nova Lima and is not far from Belo Horizonte, around 20km or 1/2 of an hours drive, hilly and green enviroment. great fauna and flora in the forest of Nova Lima, the Serra do Curral surrounds the Town.
on an altitud of around 750m, with a very nice climate, pleasant summer and mild winters, though it rains quite often.
the urban landscape is build, curriously by the English in the 18th century.the process of iron was established by the English too and the Zig-Zag street one of the curiosities in Nova Lima

the royal trails linked the State Minas Gerais to the sea, from Diamantina to Parati State Rio de Janairo. the gold passed through and goods coming in from the coast.
the royal trail refers to the settlers and slaves alike, lush vegetation, the soil rich with gold, diamonds and minerals.
Towns like Diamantina, Sabara, Mariana where build by settlers from the old country Europe, with the use of slaves and indiginous people building a new country, Brasil.

the Historian Luiz Felipe de Alencastro put it this way: ' Minas was inventing Brasil, or better, Minas was creating Brasil.'

the trails are around 500km from Rio de Janeiro and around 250km from Belo Horizonte, the Capital of Minas Gerais..please click on the pix

    See, Alas, the Land Violated

by NedHopkins Written Dec 7, 2003

After the gold played out, in the 18th century, semi-precious stones took pride of place in Minas's exports. Today it's iron ore — but gems are still extensively mined.

The hill here being ravaged is has a rich load of imperial topaz, one of the most valuable of semi-precious stones.

    The "mine" is near Mariana.
