Take the bus to Ouro Preto.

You are very likely to arrive to Ouro Preto by bus as there is no airport and it´s far from the coast and few people would want to drive in their own car up there.
This is no problem as the long distance busses in Brazil are generally of a very good quality and to main nearby cities like Rio De Janeiro and Belo Horizonte, you have several daily busses, including the luxurious "leito" busses with air condition and steward service on board.

The bus station in Ouro Preto is about 1 kilometer from the center of the old town and an easy walk or a 5 minute cab ride.

Ouro Prêto is about 100kms from Belo Horizonte. Buses of Passaro Verde company – (31)3201-2687 - leave daily and take about 2.5 hours. Tickets cost 20R$. Have in mind that the Belo Horizonte airport is 33kms away from the bus station and it will take you about an hour to reach it.
From Rio it is 417km/475km. Util has one bus daily – (21)2253-3884.
In Sao Paulo use Tiete bus station which is connected to the Metro net..Company Util has two buses daily. It is 745 kilometers away.
There are several companies serving this route depending on where you take it, Passaro verde, Util , Vale de Ouro, Itapemirim and more.
Alternatively you can have a flight to Belo Horizonte and then a bus to Ouro Prêto.

From Belo Horizonte Airport to Ouro Preto by bus

by Dutras Written Nov 20, 2007

You can do it very unexpensive and comfortably from and to Belo Horizonte airport (Confins) by bus. From the airport to the city center you take the airport bus (R$15,00) that will take you to the proximities of the city bus station. From there you will find buses (leaving at about every hour) to Ouro Preto. This will take about two hours and costs R$17,00. In your way back you do the reverse.
By the way, the city bus linking Ouro Preto to Mariana costs R$1,80 and takes about 30 minutes to make the route. So, you can go to Mariana in the old train (R$15,00 one way - if you are above 60 you pay half, but take a photo id that show your age to the train station ticket office) and return by bus. This will let stay longer in Mariana, a small barroc jewel, and also have time for a great home made ice-cream at the main "praça".

Maria Fumaca..old Train Station of Mariana, good way to go around, but busses where more reliable and more frequent., the Train does not run anymore as public transport, though as touristtrain very handy and the old trainstation has been beautiful renovated and nowdays a museum
but of course getting to Ouro Preto these days is much easier.
around 65km from Belo Horizonte by bus, the Capital of Minas Gerais and around 400km from Rio de Janeiro..good bus connection, but if time is of the essence, take a flight

Get your ticket ahead of time if you are going during a holiday. On normal weekends it shouldn't be a problem. It costs about R$41 each way. Don't hesitate to upgrade for a bit more money to get a more comfortable bus. I took the night bus. It left at 11:30p and arrived around 6am. I did the same for my return. The bus left OP at 10p.

Maybe not on this private bus - but yes on the official busses.
