Pôrto das Galinhas Things to Do

  • Jangada Ballet

Everybody goes to the natural pool (that's the main attraction of Porto das Galinhas). But even if you decide to stay in the beach, the departure of all the "jangada", when the tide comes, compose a quiet and beautiful ballet, in contrast with excitement of the tourists on the way.

    more
  • The path of the shades

The sun is severe, the mandatory stay in the pools will burn a little more our clear skin, and all the resources are useful to extend protection as far as possible. The empty umbrellas spreading close to the water compose a precious path to and from the sea and allow funny perspectives of the beach.

  • Natural Pools

The top attraction in Porto de Galinhas are the natural pools in the reef. It is, for sure an interesting trip, but not a good idea to have a bath. The "pool" is small, with a crowd in it, lots of fish, and food, and... some dirt. The best is the fun with the fish around you, and the silhouettes of the several "jangadas" circling it. It is a short...

  • Sympathy and... thats all

I was taken there by a taxi driver with a strong recommendation. I must confess that it was his most failed hint. Maybe we choose the wrong dish, but the shrimps were only acceptable and they hadn't an essential thing for my meals: wine. A good pineapple was well presented for desert. The girl who served us almost in exclusive was nice, and felt in...

  • The Fresh Seafood is an experience not...

A fantastic experience, a local boy comes and asks you what you wish to eat, then he comes with a tray of a variety of fresh fish of your choice. You pick what you want and they will cook for you, right there… on the beach!! FANTASTIC!!!

Pôrto das Galinhas Transportation

  • Jangada

The short trip to the reef and its pools is made with a raft using a small sail almost as decoration, since most of the way is made with the sailor pushing a paddle against the reef. Asking him if it wouldn't damage the reef, the answer was "No", but I was not too convinced.

  • Taxi's in Porto

I think that if you speak Portugese (which I cannot) you can negociate some prices, but when we were there it was 8 Real's(each way, regardless of how many passengers) from most of the hotels to the center of Porto. Very few of the taxi's are marked, but don't worry, they won't let you walk by without asking if you need a ride.

  • Rent a car

Before get there, or to get to Recife Airport try to rent a car with or without driver. You may get it in normal agencies or in internet. Ininternet you may reach one of the hoptels there and usually they know someone that may reach you from the airport and show the local views. It's cheaper than to hire a Buggy with a "bugeiro" every time that you...

Pôrto das Galinhas Warnings and Dangers

  • Eccosystem Protecting

In Maragogi and Itamaracá it was easy to notice the precautions took to protect the reef and its life. In Porto de Galinhas no special warning was made. Maybe because everything happens in a single hole, in a secluded area, where the fish seem domesticated, such is the tranquility they show eating from people's hands, the visual control is easier,...

  • Sun Burning

The trip to the pool must respect the low tide. This means that you risk to go there at an inconvenient hour, when the sun is high and dangerous (it happened to us, both in Porto de Galinhas and Maragogi. Without a shade in the reefs, either you use lots of sun protection (not advisable for the fish), or... keep your t-shirt on. It will not take...

  • Searching for open waters

Those (like me) that love open waters with good surf, after a brief appreciation of the calm behind the reefs may feel the nostalgia of waves and try to go further to open sea. Its dangerous. Walking on the reef it's possible, but its ocean face is 15 meters deep, and with the waves striking it would be a foolish idea. But... what a pity!

Pôrto das Galinhas Tourist Traps

  • Bugeiros

Try to plan your visits around Porto Galinhas and rent a car. If you see, prices for 2 hours trips or less are very expensive if you compare with a all day or more days of a rented car, with or without driver (bugeiro). At least get a tour that takes all the spots that you want to visit and ask to teh hotel reception for a person that may take you...

  • PRICES OF SOMETHINGS YOU'LL NEED IN...

I think,at least from my own experience, that the most frequent tourist trap in this world is how much locals can abuse with the prices as soon as you open your mouth to talk and they feel you are...a Tourist! In Brazil, for those who don't know, the language has many accents, depending from where you come from, than, even us,brazilians, are fastly...

Luggage and bags: You don't need to many clothes. During the day you may use anywhere ( except churches)your swimming suit or shorts with a T-Shirt. At night you may keep it or change for shorts /skirt/jeans with a T-shirt or shirt.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Take cotton or linnen clothes. Sandals or other open shoes. A hat will be nice too and sun glasses. You may buy some havaianas rubber sandals pair there for less than 5 Euros.

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Repelents and the basic aspirine.Sun protector and After Sun cream. Evan with no direct sun you will get burn if you don't protect your self.

Photo Equipment: Films are expensive there. Bring some from the freeshop or from Recife.

Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: Not even the beach towel is a fundamental piece. You'll get dry fast there. hat and sun glasses.

Miscellaneous: In any acasion drink water from faucets! Buy a big bottle and a litle one. Than Refill the small one before go outside to a long walsk or to the beach.

Tente acertar uma carona pra ir junto com pescadores numa pescaria, que é o trabalho deles: pescar pra si e pra vender às peixarias e a hotéis. De manhã bem cedo, amanhecendo. In Porto,as you see in this picture, only a snorkle and good luck are enough!
But those with scuba diving in mind, the coral reefs can be found in many points, and so as the grottos!

Pôrto das Galinhas Favorites

  • A Touristy Village

With excellent beaches in Pernambuco, I was surprised in most of the visited places by the absence of the usual commercial stalls. As a matter of fact, everything is sold in the beaches, but Porto de Galinhas was the only place where, walking in the streets, I felt that tourism is the main activity in town. Small shops line the streets, and, maybe,...
