In the year of 1906, for increase the generation of energy, the company decided to build in the region of Holy Amaro an artificial lake, that would stay acquaintance as the Dam of the Guarapiranga. The works lasted three years and were supervised by the American engineer M. M. Murtaugh. To Light perceived the recreational potential of the dam and tried better explore the communication with the localities, installing lines of special trolleys for the visitors. In 1928 the Dam of the Guarapiranga received the function of supply of water to capital native of São Paulo. In the following year was inaugurated the System of Supplying of the Guarapiranga, the second in water output capacity of the capital, smaller barely than the System Cantareira. During that epoch and in the decade that happened the creation of the system, were not takings the necessary measures for the prevention of the problem that arose with the future occupation of area of the springs of the dam. The project of development of the region of Interlagos, to the margins of the Dam of the Guarapiranga, was being implanted from 1937, in the undertaking baptized with the name of "City Satellite Balneária of Interlagos", with the area of 4 millions of m2. The City Satellite, in the reality, did not it arrive to be fixed as such, insofar as was involved by the urban expansion of São Paulo, like well as his points of main appeal, as the race track and the beach. Others elements that would be part of their assembly, as the hotel of the beach and the church matrix, had even opportunity of itself fix. The occupation of the suburbs of the south zone of São Paulo by the industrious population initiated itself in the years 40. In the decade of 1960, the implementation of marginal roads, beside the channel of I laugh pine Trees, reinforced the addressing of the urban expansion for the south zone. This occupation would provoke the enlargement of the demand by housing areas. It is in this trial that, already in the years 70, in regions that would come it to be defined with areas of environmental protection, began it arise the secret plot-divisions, the which would be presented like alternative of dwelling for the population of decrease yield that afluíra to the region. In 1907, to Cia Light &Power (present Eletropaulo), built a dam for dam I laugh Guarapiranga, and for that, was raised the dam of the affluent river of him I laugh pine Tree. Although to Guarapiranga has been the first reservoir built in the region, his utility was for regularize to outflow of I laugh Tietê, that outside a lot reduced because of the dry spell. However, due to a new dry spell that left São Paulo with grave water supplying problems in the beginning of the years 20, began it think of utilizing for this end the reservoir of the dam.
The Basin of the Guarapiranga, that occupies an area approached of 630km2 and I possessed a high water potential, became then spring of supplying á start from this epoch. However, due á an an occupation disorganized and irregular in the region already in the years 60, the spring passed it face environmental problems, as the compromise of the water of the reservoir.
At present, 750 thousand families live in the Basin of the Guarapiranga, being that an installment of that population lives secretly. For revert this chart, were urgent measure takings by the Government of the State in the decade of 90. With the participation of the city Hall of S.PAULO and the collaboration of the Subprefeituras, was established in 1992 the Program of Environmental Sanitation of the Basin of the Guarapiranga.
The program seeks to develop two lines of actions: Correcting and Preventive. To first it is going to reduce the mischief already caused á dam, and to second search reorganize the use of soil for guarantee the environmental protection. For achievement of the Program, committed organs in environmental questions invested capital and the the positive results compensated the efforts. At present, the dam of the Guarapiranga benefits-itself of the Law Specifies of the Guarapiranga, inciativa of the Government of S. Paulo and approved in the in force year, that is destined also á recuperation and protection of the springs.

It´s name is a tribute to Saint Jorge and various artists named Jorge: singers, composers, writers, etc.

Actually, "jump" is not the technical word to use...I believe rockclimbers call it "rappel"
For over 10 years, rockclimbers and their families have rappelled off this overpass onto the median of the Avenida Sumare below. The pictures explain it all!
For a small fee, they will clip you onto them so you can experience this yourself.

It is not in the city of São Paulo, it is part of the State, 3 hours going south close to the states limits between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. It was made in the 70s, and today it is the most important catholici pilgrimage center in Brazil.
I am catholic as everybody knows, and everytime I go to São paulo by car, I stop there to attend the Mess and ask god to bless every trip I take!
BASILICA NOSSA SENHORA DE APARECIDA
The Image of the Holy Mother was found in Paraiba River, and when the fishermen found the image, the River suddenly gave millions of fish to the fishermen's web, since that miracle many years ago, the city of Aparecida became our catholic Mecca.
