This place is special to me because I live very close and I have studied at São Bento elementary school which is just beside the church. Its detailled architecture is gorgeous and when they decorate for weddings, its beautiful. A nice thing to do is listen to the gregorian mass (Saturdays 6AM and Sundays 10AM) and then buy a delicious manioc bread or special cakes prepared by the monks.

Se Cathedral by RudoElCojonudo The main church in the city. A required spot if you are visiting the city. I heard that the Se cathedral is a copy of another european cathedral, maybe Milan´s Duomo, but im not sure. The entrance is free, so you can go inside an pray for your soul. ;-P In the square in front of the main entrance you´ll see religious speaker and many begs. Some people says that it´s a dangerous place but I think that there are much more dangerous places in Sao Paulo. But anyway, hide your cameras and jewerly as much as possible. It all started right here. by glabah This is the location where São Paulo was founded. It includes chapel, museum, and other items relating to the early history of the city. This includes the leg bone of the founder of the city. The location is historic, but a number of the buildings is quite recent. I only recommend this location for those who are avid fans of historic locations, since the buildings surrounding the monument are actually quite a bit more recent than 1554. Catedral Metropolitana from Praça da Sé by glabah The church is an impressive sight, and the various choas in the plaza (protests, venders, etc.) are interesting for people watchers. Be realistic, however. This building was completed in 1954 (after 42 years of construction). It is impressive, but it is the meotropolitan cathedral of the largest city in South America. It should be impressive. The Brazilian guide book I have (Guia Quatro Rodas) rates the Basilica de São Bento (1922) as a much more interesting place for those who like visiting historic churches. The Ordem Terceira do Carmo (1632) is a much older building and is supposed to have wonderful details throughout the church. Since there are so many that have visited the Metropolitan Cathedral (also called Catedral da Sé) I would suggest one of these lesser known churches might be more interesting. by Polly74 The Pátio do Colegio marks the place where the city of São Paulo was founded. It is now a center for cultural activity. Initially a Jesuit school was built in this spot with the help of the local Guaianás Native American inhabitants. Besides the school itself and a church, the Achieta Museum is also housed here, displaying original sculptures by the Guarani native inhabitants, and a model reproduction of São Paulo in the 16th century.
