Well despite what my guide book decribe Brasil, I have visited the country several times and I have not encounter nor been involved in any crime scenes or robberies. I do not say that it does not exist, mainly maybe in the poor parts of towns, but if you take the common steps then you are as safe as you will be anywhere in the world.
If you need some chewing gum buy it from this kids,in the shops too expensive and sometimes out of date. Sometimes they will not go away till they make a sale so buy some delicious sweets so they leave you alone for a while.. Alternatively you can start talking English or Turkish to them and they will go away quickly.
