    The National Institute of Amazon Research (INPA - INSTITUTO NACIONAL DE PESQUISAS DA AMAZÔNIA) was created in 1995 to develop scientific and technologic studies and to preserve amazonian species.

    You can visit INPA and check out expositions of amazonian vegetation, insects and projects developed by the researchers and also see some amazing animals, such as:
    Amazonian alligators;
    The Giant Otter (They're just so cute! They're the biggest among all the 13 otter species of the world and one of the greatest predators of the tropical rainforests of South America); and
    The Amazonian manatee (Species in danger of extinction, exclusively of fresh water, spread throughout the Amazon basin.)

    For kids and nature lovers, it's a nice experience.

    Group visits are scheduled in advanced.
    Entrace tax: R$ 4.00, except for wednesdays -Entrace is free.

    On Mondays it's closed.

    We were totally horrified with the conditions that the Giant Otter and manatees were kept in at Bosque da Cincia. I plan to write to enviromental groups to pressure for improvement. Please do so too. Better to go to the Emilio Goeldi Zoological Garden in Belem, where all the species have far more natural and healthier surroundings.

    OTTER GONE WILD!

    At the Bosque da Ciencia zoo, there was this one fellow here who went totally berzerk over the frozen fish the trainer was tossing in for lunch...he and his buddy ripped those fishheads off like there was no tomorrow. Made you kinda swear off bacalhau your own self, at least for that one day.

    You don't reeeally have to join a jungle expedition to see wildlife here...check out the interesting zoo and rainforest combo, about 5km northeast of central Manaus, in the Petropolis district. There are lots of paths for hiking and several animal exhibits, although not as many as you might like or have a right to expect, really...on the other hand, the macaws and monkeys here are great pals! Where else are you going to see birds and primates eating at the same table, eh?!
