We booked a tour with Swallows and Amazon Tours (owned by Mark A). It cost us $1650 for a 3 day tour. Two days before the tour, we were told that the boat had broken down and that they could not find a replacement. We were instead booked at a jungle lodge, which was nice but not what we had paid for.
We then decided to book another tour at the Manaus port. While there, we found out that the Swallows boat had never broken down, but that another couple had booked it for a longer period (7 days). In other words we were bumped off for a higher bid ... after we paid.
Unique Suggestions: You don't need a pre-booked tour to see the Amazon. You can pay for a 3 hour tour with a local boat owner at the Manaus port for a much lower price.
Fun Alternatives: If you insist on a boat tour, try Clipper Cruises.
I would recommend instead, a plane tour. You see more of the amazon that way.
We never once came across anyone who didnt want money or beer. When we thought we had found someone friendly, they then tried to demand some sort of payment.
We were even held up by a guy we bought a beer for early, who chased a couple of peddlers away from our table.
We chased him off however, but it could have been so much worse.
Unique Suggestions: Anyone at all that comes over to you that does not appear to be a tourist, send them away, just put your hand up and say no.
Once you have agreed to talk with them, you will never get away from them.
Fun Alternatives: Whether it was just us who had the bad luck, or what, I have no idea, but I find it hard to imagine that anyone else had it any other way.
