Also in the east coastline of Fortaleza, Canoa Quebrada, the latter symbolized by a crescent moon and a star, and is considered the mystic beach of Ceará. "Canoa", with its colony installed over the "falésías", takes visitors to float between the sky and the sea, and at night turns into a "Babel", where music in the bars is played non-stop. It offers lodging with an excellent infrastructure and international cuisine.

I have never been there, but I plan to... :)

I have only been to Morro Branco a couple of times. It is located in the east coasline of Fortaleza. It is famous for their pottery' and wood handicraft. The colorful "falésias and the colorful sand inspires many artists. In the last few years Morro Branco has been one of the most popular sport for street carnival for young adults. You can ride a buggy, enjoy the nightlife, the beach, or just relax.

    Pedra Furada

I know, I know, It is beautiful... I lived in Fortaleza for 16 years, and believe it or not, I have NEVER been to Jericoacara. Well... That is going to change... Next time that I go home, I am defenetly taking my husband and inviting some friends to go to Jericoacoara with me. Now, about Jericoacoara:

Jericoacoara, better known as "Jeri" (the name is too big ) is an Area of Envinromental Proctection. Not until recently, 1985, it turned from a small fishermen village to a seeked tourist spot. In 1994 the American newspaper "Washington Post Magazine" had Jericoacoara on it's list for one of the 10 most beautiful beaches in the PLANET. Jericoacoara is located 300km from Fortaleza, and the last 15km of the beach has no kind of roads, so you will need a 4x4 to get by.

And what does Jericoacoara means?? It came from the "Tupi-Guarani" Indians and menas "buraco das tartarugas" (whole of the turtles). And what to expect from Jericoacoara?? Well, until recently, there were no hotels or anything there. So if you like the big beaches with easy access to things, Jeri is not your beach. Not everywhere accepts credit cards, or there are no ATM's around. There are hotels and restaurants with good food, but nothing is very glamorous. But if you are looking for a place that will take your breath away, and put you in intense touch with the nature, then, this is your paradise. As I said, God must have spent a little more time on it!!!!!!!!!!!!

To wrap it up, Jeri has the best Winsurf of the state, maybe of the country. Besides winsurf, you can always rent a horse and go around the beach, go in a buggy ride, do sand board, rent a boat, go out at night or... Don't do anything... Just relax, and enjoy nature.

Paracuru is a beautiful beach along the west coastline of Fortaleza. Paracuru, prefered for the practice of nautical sports, has an intense movement of people during carnival time. My family has a beach house in paracuru. I remember when we were little, we always went to the street carnival in Paracuru. We got all dressed up in our costumes and we would take eggs and flour and throw at each other and at other people. It was awesome. We did that all 4 nights of Carnival. Paracuru will always have a special place in my heart!

With extensive beaches and dunes up to 30 meters high, the first prominant spot is Cumbuco beach, 37km from the Capital, surrounded by palm trees and lagoons, situated among dunes with an excellent tourist structure. This local offers several leisure ways, as horseback riding dune buggies, four-wheelers and ultra-lights rentals as well as the traditional raft sailing. The most famous lagoons, are of course "Lagoa do Banana" and "Lagoa de Parnamirim". I have a friend that has a beach house in Cumbuco. Sometimes, we want to get away from town, but not too far away, and we will go to Cumbuco. Somebody brings the beer, somebody bringas the "cachaca", the meat, the pacoca and we spend the weekend barbecuing and having fun. There are lost of holtels and pousadas to stay in Cumbuco. Cumbuco is one of the closest and most known beaches in the west coastline of Fortaleza.

  • INSANO Water Slide - Fortaleza
    INSANO Water Slide
    by SoccerGirl09
I don't know if this really qualifies as a "Off the Beaten Path Activity" because that is a well known Water park. I just think that you might miss it because usually, the tourists stay pretty much in one part of town, and it is kinda far away from most places. It is 20km from the Airport and 16km from "Iguatemi Shopping" (our biggest mall). Beach Park is not only a Water Park, they also have a resort and you can enjoy the beach, or go to the gift shop. This is a picture of "Insano" (Insane) one of the atractions of the water park. "Insano is the biggestwater slide in the world, it is equivalent to a 14 floor building and you go from 0 to 101km/h in only 4 seconds. My advice for the girls is: If you decide to fo on the "Insano", wear a one piece bathing suit because if you wear a two piece, you might not have it in the right places by the time you get down :).

And just a quick note. For the natives, Beach Park is very expensive. It is totally designed for tourists. But if your money is the american dollar, it won't be too bad. :)

The addres is: Rua Porto das Dunas 2734, Aquiraz, CE.

This is one of the most beautiful churches in town it is also the church that my wife and I got married in. This church is a must see if you are in Fortaleza. It is very beuatiful and very colorful and it is very well maintained.

The walls are covered with every saint that you can possibly think of and there are alters in every possible corner.

The doors are open all day long to come in to visit and pray or they have mass everyday
    Monday - Friday 6:30 AM & 5:00 PM
Saturday and Sunday 6:30 AM, 8:00 AM, 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM

It's where you see real local people working or just running around in a rush. And it's all very lively. Men singing "cordel" songs is the most interesting thing to see there. Where they come up with sentences out of nowhere and at the moment they're singing. Check Praça do Ferreira (Ferreira Square) and look for São Luis cinema theatre. It's the oldest cinema place here and it's massive. And don't forget to try out sugar cane juice with the famous Pastel. You'll fall in love! :)

Another beautiful beach in the west coastline. I have been there a few times, and the picture doesn't do justice to the place. One of the cool things to do there is to go on a boat ride along the coast.
