Had planned to go to Brasil again this spring, but plans changed. During your visit try to get a few (full day) outings in to some of the beautiful beach areas (resorts) which can be arranged easily from the hotel you may be staying and are not expensive.
Places like Canoa Quebrada, Beach park, Morro Branco, Cumbucu or Lagoinha to mention just a few are well worth the visit, as the beach right in Fortaleza along Beira Mar Ave. is not the best. The closest - Futuro beach - is only about 8 km away and can be reached by the inexpensive "Top Bus".
You will have a good time and I am sure you will enjoy. If you like to taste some great (and cheap) Arabian food, go to "HABIB's", which is just 1 block north of Beira Mar Ave. (the main strip along the beach). Or the restaurant near the "Englishman Bridge" is nice too. Dont leave home without your sunlotion, you WILL need it.

ps: Beira Mar Avenue, the picture postcard of Fortaleza, is the most visited tourist spot in the city. Its unmistakable beauty, proportioned by the seafront and the magnificent recreational setting, offers moments of pure pleasure strolling along the esplanade, trying out the restaurants with their gastronomic delights or shopping for handcrafts. It is a great center for cultural, artistic and sporting events. It's 25 mins away from the city, but it's worth going there. It isn't as cheap as the "barracas" at Praia do Futuro, but the service is better and the beach is so much more quiet. Directions: Porto das Dunas - 20/25 mins away from Fortaleza

They are delicious, cheap and come in this delicious sauce.
The best "barraca" to eat crab is Cocobeach and the price is around 2 reais.

I know, here in norther Brazil, a place with great beaches and great beach resort-towns everywhere, what is to make you go to one and not the other.
Well, I cannot advise you as I have not been to that many resort-towns but my friend from Fortaleza, a true-blue beach-babe, claims that this is her favourite, so it ought to mean something.
Canoa has a row of dark red cliff where there are restaurants and bars located at the base... surprisingly on stilts. In front of these restaurants and bars, there is an immense flat piece of gorgeous beach.
At first, I wondered why all the restaurants are packed so tightly to the base of the cliffs. Then, as I tanned the entire afternoon, I know why. The tide comes really up close!! Sitting on one of the beach-chairs near a bar, I had to move 3 times, before finally giving up. No wonder the bars and restaurants are on stilts!!
If you are here on a full moon, you are in luck. Firstly, you can watch the bright full moon rising from the horizon of the ocean. A stunningly surreal sight!
Secondly, you can join the Full Moon Party at Freedom Bar (the one with the huge Bob Marley's face) and party around the camp-fire til sun-rise. Meanwhile, you can trace the full moon as it circles around the sky on top of you.
Throughout the night, the tide will ebb and flow right back up to the stilts just before sun-rise... provided you have not collapsed from too much drink or grass.
A wonderful experience to see the FULL MOON RISE and then, the SUN RISE. Leave a Comment

 Sunset over the sea... a rare

But once after Natal, the coastline of Brazil curves north-west and here in Ponte de Inglesa of Fortaleza, a jetty that juts out to the ocean, you can watch the sun-set over the watery horizon. A treasured sight, indeed.
Come in the evening, join the numerous locals basking out here in the evening slanting rays. This jetty has restaurants and shops and even a small stage where sometimes, there are simple concerts going on.

If you're coming yo Fortaleza, check this thing out. Look for the off road tours by the deserted beaches and sand dunes on board Land Rovers. It's an amazing experience because of the incredible landscapes, warm sea water, kind and espontaneous people and the all year-long sunny weather. Getting to Fortaleza, escape to Jericoacoara, considered one of the Top 10 beaches in the world by some travel guides, is one of the "gotta go" places (at least once in a lifetime). There yo can find nice lodges, good small restaurants, beautiful people, buggy tours and kitesurf classes. Oh - and don't forget to see the sunset from the sand dunes, it's unforgatable! There,if you never danced, you can learn forró, and you can be very good( i tell you...i WAS very bad before Pirata´s night!!)
