The Strong Tropical Sun
In Jeri it is common to get a heavy sunburn without even noticing. The heat grows unbearable from eleven onwards but the constant breeze and the refreshing water make it difficult to realize the intense heat.
The regions hot sun and heat require light clothes, sun glasses, a hat and the use of sunblock with a very high SPF, preferably resistant to sea water.
Make sure you drink plenty of liquids, especially water. Agua de coco (coconut water) is also very good!
i think there are almost no dangers in this area..
But just look out in jijoca(small village where you have to leave your car because of the dunes)
There are people asking you if they can drive you to jerricoacoara with your own car!!
we knew it was not possible getting there with a normal car, so probably they drop you on another beach in the area and say :" this is jerricoacoara"
There are no ATM's in Jeri, no not even one. While most restaurants and shops accept Credit Cards - Visa/Mastercard, some of the pousada's do NOT so you will need cash to pay for your accommodation. Some of our group made this mistake and had to hire a beach buggy to bring them down the coast to the nearest town with an ATM.
Make sure you bring enough cash with you as it can be very difficult to get to an ATM and will lead to problems later on. If your low on cash use a card when you can and just make sure you have enough money to pay for your accomm.
Make your hotel/hostel/Inn/guesthouse booking in advance!!
There are a limited nbr of possibilities to stay in Jeri, since the constructions of new accomodations stopped in 1992,and the nbr of tourists only increased!!
You can find some websites (hope in english too) for advanced bookings online!
Money:be prepared because banks or changes offices don't exist here, and it's rare to find places which accept CC or checks!
Besides, many people stay at he end much more than planned (LOL!!We did!),than bring REAIS (local currency) and enough for any situation!
Remember you are in an environmental preservation area:you're not allowed to throw garbage on the beach(or any other place besides trash can),you're not allowed to hunt, pollute, collect seashells and drive off the signed tracks on the dunes!!
Jeri belongs to all of us,help to preserve it!!
Beware!!! We learned the hard way. Some unscrupulous pousada owners advertise on the internet that they are located in Jericoacoara when they really are not. We made reservations at Pousada do Paulo thinking that it was located in Jericoacoara. The Pousada's website stated that it is located in Jericoacoara and the proprietor (Paulo) (during several telephone conversations) lead us to believe his pousada is located IN Jericoacoara. Unfortuneately we paid a R$100 deposit in advance to reserve one of his rooms.
Needless to say, when we arrived at the Pousada do Paulo we were stunned to learn that Pousada do Paulo is NOT located in Jericoacoara. It is actually located in a town called Jijoca, 15 km inland from the coast and 20 km from Jericoacoara. The pousada owner, Paulo, refused to return our R$100 deposit and we had to pay an additional R$50 for a ride to Jericoacoara. An expensive (R$150) lesson.
Once in Jeri, we asked around to learn out how we had made such an enormous mistake. Jericoacoara's locals informed us that this 'false advertising' has been happening for over a year and Jericoacoara's business owners aren't too happy about the loss of business. By the way, as of this writing, Pousada do Paulo's website still states that it is located in Jericoacoara.
Summary Warning: if you want to spend your vacation in Jericoacoara, don't go to Pousada do Paulo... because it's not in Jericoacoara.
