The main church in Pereiro was built in the late 1700s. It is home to a "Cristo Morto" a statue of Christ after he was taken off the cross. It is know far and wide for it's healing powers and people travel form all around the countryside to visit and pray here.

If you thought that Rio was the only city in Brazil with a Christ statue you must not have heard of Pereiro. A small town on the border of Ceara, Rio Grande do Norte, and Paraiba. They are proud of the fact that they also have a great big Christ statue on top of a small mountain.

You can visit the Christ Statue by driving or walking to the top of the mountain there. On the way up there are several paintings and prayers that you can stop and catch your breath at.
Once at the top you will be able to see out over the entire valley and decide from there your next step.... and now you have to go all the way back down!

Pereiro is 340 km from Fortaleza some 4 hours by car. It is a short 15 minute drive to Sao Miguel in Rio Grande do Norte.

Everything you do in Pereiro is already off the beaten path. I guess I was the first "Gringo" to visit there, at least the first that anyone could remember. My first visit to was in Pereiro was in I think 2002. I remember they had a whole bunch of tomatoes and I made spaghetti sauce with them, It was like I had just invented the wheel.
