Pousada dos Guaras: Regional Cooking in the Green Area of Palm Trees
As I was staying in Pousada dos Guaras, about 1 km from the Centro Historico, I thought it would be most convinient to dine also here. And besides, I've been told that the food they prepare is very good.
The restaurant is a wooden structure with a little terrace, beautifully situated in a quiet spot near the water, in the extensive green area of palm trees.
It was right after the New Year and most of the people have left. I was one of the very few guests in the restaurant. Owner of the pousada joined me during the dinner and we had a very nice conversation. He told me a lot of interesting things about Maranhao and its beautiful, very little known places that were worth visiting.
Favorite Dish: I had moqueca de peixe (Brazilian fish stew), accompanied by pirao and rice. I washed the meal down with my favourite Brazilian drink, caipirinha.
The food here proved to be indeed very delicious. I had dinner, breakfast and lunch. Everything was prepared with the greatest attention and of a high quality.

CASA DA BATIZÁ: A HOME AND A RESTAURANT
You just have to ask for her name, Batizah, and all the locals know her, she is always ready to help everyone, she is also the person who know about everything about the village's life, and she loves so much welcoming people that she decided to make a restaurant in her own house, which is a big old house right located in the main street named JACARÉ.
She has a large smile everytime she sees you.
Batiza is a slave daughter, she has enough age to ave all grand children all around her..she will tell you many tales about AFRICAN TRADITIONS AND SANTERIA.
Favorite Dish: When me and Rafael went there, she served a wonderful SHRIMP PIE...There is not ATM Machine in the island so we could not take money and we found ourselves broken, she had no doubt, she served the food and told us to pay her later...
Well I lived in São Luis and Rafa in Rio de Janeiro, which means that we would never return to the island so soon, but we asked her if she has a bank account so we could send her the money, we did and I also helped her to translate her menu into english.
Alcantara s not a popular destination, but one or two adventures like us sometimes go there, and discover how fascinating its people and its marvelous island is!
