Maranhão is a off the beaten path itself...and you know how accurate I am travel...and I found such a great secret, a location called Raposa...Easy to reach, it is a fishermen village, but with some treasures like mangroves and dune beaches! The Barra da Raposa is there, waiting for you to enjoy...The water is pleasanty warm and this is one of the places that you really get to a conclusion that God is Brazilian.

Raposa is less than two hours from São Luis...

AN ISLAND OF DREAMS - ALCANTARA

by RafaelTheSecond Written Jan 6, 2007

When I travel I like getting in touch with the people, i do love to go deep in their cultures and beliefs. i like to exchange ideas with smart people, and I do love to travel with friends who live in a place I am visiting, and find out places that not even that person have visited before!

I was very fortunated to meet Marcone, because he is a real lover of his land!;) A person who is proud of his home is always a great company when you choose a place to visit!

Marcone is a ddep expert in Maranhão's History and being with him is a great informal lesson about such a delicious state, and we managed to take a boat and reach an island called Alcantara, where we can feel in the skin, the glorious past of this so brave and wild territory called Maranhão!

From the ruins of an old covent, we could see the incredible views of the island...the old constructions were built on the top of a hill that we even could see São Luis in the other side of the Continent.

Going to Alcantara will be a plus in your trip to the northern surprises of Brazil!

I would like to thank him for all the incredible things I have seem in my journey to this wonderful land. And you should never miss this amazing hidden treasure pretty close to São Luis!

HOW TO GET TO SANTO AMARO

by RafaelTheSecond Updated Mar 28, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

All main bus station in every brazilian city is called RODOVIARIA!

Once you are in São Luis - CAPITAL OF MARANHAO STATE - You will go to the Rodoviaria. Easy to reach by taxi from every part of the town, and taxis there are not so expensive indeed. some would know this place as Terminal Rodoviario, it is located in a district called Turu, same road that leads to the airport.

There will be many little stores where you will buy your tickets, once you are there go to CISNES BRANCOS, that is the name of the bus company that you will use to Santo Amaro!

The ticket will be less than 20 american dollars but you will have to pay in REAIS (brazilian money)

The trip will take around 3 hours to get to the second stage of the trip, you will stop in a little village called Sangue.

After that you will take a 4X4 Toyota Jeep to cross the thick flat forest in a sandy road full of water holes and incredible landscape a little bit before the evening falls.

GOING SOUTH - CAROLINA - PART ONE

by RafaelTheSecond Written Aug 12, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Maranhão is already a destination that almost no one have heard about, when you come across with a location named CAROLINA in the map you will just think that it is one more poor city of the endless brazilian countryside....WHEN YOU GO NORTH YOU WILL NEVER GO TO PLACES CALLED CAROLINA, BALSAS, COLINAS, SAO RAIMUNDO DAS MANGABEIRAS.....

Lethal mistake I would say...you should pay attention in the little details....

But Carolina has something special, a little village with nothing to do at the first sight, but for sure when you go there you will find a village with strong personaly with people with free spirit and you will not believe that you are suddenly in the south of Maranhão.

JUST THINK ABOUT IT...WHAT IS MARANHÃO?????

    AND WORSE, WHAT IS CAROLINA!?????

If you are a traveller like me you will soon find out way, and I have some explanations....

WHILE YOU WAIT FOR YOUR TOYOTA

by RafaelTheSecond Updated Mar 28, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

There is nothign to see, but the surroundings are nice to see, there are some little farms and two bars one with a little grocery, and there is another bar on the other side of the road where you can find POOL to play, great to waste sometime, but be arare of the bus or the toyota, because if you miss it, you will have to sleep in the road!;)

Marcone is a very curious bloke, and he was wondering around while we were waiting for the Toyota to continue our trip. We stayed in Sangue for 20 minutes before departuring to Santo Amaro.

ONE HOUR AND A HALF TRIP ON THE SANDY ROAD AND NARROW ONE!!!

it reminds the a rallie in the desert, but with full of small trees and many many rivers that we have to cross!

GOING SOUTH - CAROLINA - PART TWO

by RafaelTheSecond Updated Aug 12, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

CAROLINA has quiet streets and it is life has a lot to do with Tocantins River, it is a village where no one lock the door, it is a village where everyone treats you with a large smile in the face...a place where they get very impressed when they notice you have a different accent, now just imagine if we go there talking in english. I did that with Marcone and people thought we belonged to another planet...but never mind...Carolina is also a very important bridge between the States of Maranhão and Tocantins.

MARANHÃO BELONG TO THE NORTH EAST REGION AND TOCANTINS IS PART OF THE NORTH OF THE COUNTRY, actually in this part of Brazil you will find a sort of Amazon Vegetation with the famous brazilian savannahs more known as CERRADO BRASILEIRO.

The rhythm of the city is quite calm during the day and very interesting during the evenings...people like to go out and you will see many people walking in the streets, sitting in front of their houses simple to converse among friends!

    GOD LEFT HIS HOUSE HERE

by RafaelTheSecond Updated Mar 28, 2007

No, it is not a swiiming pool, that is unbelievable, but it is a fresh water lagoon in an enormous desert full of water holes, big ones!!! White sands dunes miles away from the ocean.

This is one of the most unknown brazilian natural attractions, the so called LENÇOIS MARANHENSES!

And the most remote side of the Lençois can be reached by a very very countryside village called SANTO AMARO!!!

I am going to teach you how to get there!!!

Here you can see Marcone and I having fun in one of the best swimming pools that we have ever seen in our entire lives!

    SECOND STAGE

by RafaelTheSecond Updated Mar 28, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

After you take the bus in São Luis, the Cisnes Branco Bus will stop at Sangue, a very small location in the middle of the road which goes to Barreirinhas!

A 4x4 Toyota truck will be waiting for you, you will stay there for a while, longenough for you to go to the toilet, if there is one, but you can solve your problems in the road itself, there are some little bushes where you can relief yourself!

There is nothing to see in Sangue, it is just a point in the middle of nothing that you will take anothe car to go to Santo Amaro....

Do not expect to find a very organized city in Santo Amaro, it is just a single village in the very interior heart of Maranhão!

    AFTER SOME HOURS..THE ORGASM....

by RafaelTheSecond Updated Mar 28, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The bus is clean, air contioning...well, Maranhão can be a natural oven sometimes!

But I do not like to go to the toilets in coaches, though sometimes there are some that you can use, but I always avoid it...

So after almost 4 hours travelling...and no clean toilets in the bar...I decided to give my wet contribution to the dry landscape of the place!;)

It is no doubt the best structure of every adventure in the dunes of Lençois in Maranhão State, the village is very small, it still keeps the SLOW LOCAL LIFE of a very genuine village of a interior little town of Maranhão State.

The city has a very funny city centre full of art craft stores and GUESS WHAT??? MANY DRUGSTORES!!

You can also find excelent RESTAURANTS on the River, many Pousadas and some cool bars with local music where you can get mixed with the local people, they are very open to meet new people and they are very helpful and friendly.

The city has a very nice River Front and the main beach called BEIRA RIO where lovers go at night to have SPECIAL MOMENTS, if you know what I mean!

    PREGUICAS RIVER IN BARREIRINHAS

by RafaelTheSecond Written May 14, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Life is quite busy at the River Front, from this place you can take boats to explore the wilderness of one of the main big rivers of this fabulous and unknow State of Maranhão. The best restaurants and art craft store can be also found in this little Space of Total Fun.

From Beira Rio water front you can also see the local boats which are used like URBAN BUSES to many little and tiny villages in the river.

BOATS ARE THE MAIN WAY OF TRANSPORTATION IN THIS PLACE!
