If you would like your dinner to be something to remember, you should visit Maracangalha, the most charming restaurants of Sao Luis. It's the opportunity not to be missed. The restaurant specializes in regional culinary variety, mostly fish, shrimps, crabs and other specialities. Dishes are prepared with daily fresh ingredients from the markets and boats that return from the sea.
The restaurant is managed by Melquiades Dantas, also known as chef Dantas, one of the most sought chefs de cuisine of Maranhao. He has a great gift of knowing manipulate seasonings and herbs, creating unique flavours to dishes. Each dish he makes is a gastronomic piece of art. Part of the great success of the restaurant is due touch of entries offered to customers - the pastelzinhos served with pepper jelly, which was also created by the chef.
Maracangalha is one of the most pleasant places of the city, beautifully decorated with vibrant colours and class and charm of the folklore of the north. It is a certain destination of many artists who visit Sao Luis, such as singer Marisa Monte, Ivete Sangalo, Zeca Baleiro, Alcione, actor Fernanda Montenegro, singer and ex-minister of culture Gilberto Gil, president Lula and many more.
Favorite Dish: It was the New Year's Day and also our goodbye dinner so we wanted to be a very special one. While we were waiting for the main dish, we were offered two kinds of pastels accompanied by the pepper jelly. The main course was a generous portion of most delicious moqueca de camarao (Brazilian shrimp stew) accompanied by pirao and rice. And for the dessert... yummy crema de cupuacu, made from my favourite fruit of the Amazon region.
We felt we were in heaven :)))
In the historical centre they put every night several food stalls that offer huge variety of home-made regional specialities. My favourite place was Barraca de comidas tipicas da Rosa.
You will quickly discover that the real delight of Maranhao is the seafood. They have everything from torta de sururu (mussel pie), casquinha de caranguejo (stuffed crab), ensopado de camarao (shrimp stew), pescada frita (fried fish), camarao (shrimps), bolinho de caranguejo (crab cake) to the city's special rice dish, arroz de cuxa (rice with crushed shrimp, garlic and the stewed leaves of two native plants).
You can choose five dishes plus rice. And you are not going to believe, all together for only 5 RS! I found it the best way to sample a diversity of regional specialities and besides, it was really delicious!! It became a practice for me every night :))
Best seafood we had in Sao Luis, the restaurant is located on the great coastal avenue in the new quarters of the city.
If you plan to spend the day on the northern beaches, go there for lunch! It is all I can say.
A very good surprise, this restaurant is maintained by SENAC, a countrywide commercial association.
It is served mainly by very good trainees, and the food is very tasty, typical from Maranhao State.
A nice atmosphere in downtown.
Favorite Dish: Local typical dishes from the cuisine of Maranhao.
