CASA DO MARANHAO - THE MAIN BUMBA MEU BOI GROUPS

by RafaelTheSecond Updated Mar 14, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This should be part three all of explanations of this party called Bumba Meu Boi held in every june!

Among many groups of Bumba Meu Boi, there are 3 groups which are the most traditional in Maranhão, they are divided into SOTAQUES...The sotaque is a style of dressing, style of performing and also the way of dance that identifies each group; the most famous SOTAQUES IN MARANHAO ARE:

SOTAQUE DE ZABUMBA - Oldest Bumba meu Boi Group, more famous for its drums and big african influence, the people dance with amazing enthusiasm, they wear strange hats in form of mushrooms and their dresses are very colorful. This group is really dear among the locals, and they come from the tine little town of Guimaraes.

SOTAQUE DE MATRACA OR SOTAQUE DA ILHA - Really famous because they originally come from São Luis, the Caboclos de Penas (indians) really perform with real passion and they are massive noisy with their drums, its beats can shake your soul!

SOTAQUE DA BAIXADA - More recognized because of the Cazumbá - a character half a man, half an animal that protect the members against the bad spirits. they are also the clowns in the party, very funny and absolutely musical, it is quite a street theatre!

CASA DO MARANHÃO - BUMBA MEU BOI - PART TWO

by RafaelTheSecond Updated Mar 14, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Actually Bumba Meu boi is part of the National Folckore, the whole country celebrate the tribute of a men and the cattle, and also we praise St. joão in this big party full of colors called BUMBA MEU BOI.

It happens every june, and it became more famous in Maranhão, every group in the biggest and smallest city in the State get together in São Luis to celebrate this party where all the people in many different communities start to play. IT IS TOTAL FUN!

BUMBA MEU BOI is also known as Boi Maranhense which makes it different from all parties in Brazil, the party started in the Cattle Period during the colonization of the country.

BOI means "bull" and BUMBA are the sound of the drums that makes the bull and the people involved to dance! And the dance has to do with the Slaves, the cowboy Pai Francisco and his great love afffair Mae Catirina. Pai Francisco did everything to satisfy his woman, and when she was pregnant she wished to eat the tongue of a bull. Pai Francisco did not think twice and killed his boss favourite bull, and gave to his promessed wife the tongue she wanted so much. the boos very angry did everything to find WHO KILLED HIS BULL.

Pai Francisco was found and blamed guilty of the Bull Murder, and his boss ordered him to bring life back to the bull, he had the help of many witches and they finally succeed to bring the bull back to life!!! :) The boss did forgive Pai Francisco and the people started to dance in order to celebrate the SECOND MLIFE OF THE BULL. As they considered Fracisco's Act a miracle.

This is more or less how the legend is introduced to the people every year, this tradition has more than 300 years and it is still very alive in people's soul!

DURING THE MONTH OF JUNE SÃO LUIS IS HUGE PARTY!!!

If you want to understand deeply more about this wonderful people of Maranhao. go to São Luis and visit this magnificent building called Casa do Maranhão. This house was built in 1793, in that time São Luis was a big trade center in the region, and thanks for the geographical position with many ports, São Luis was a great centre in the ecomony of the region which includes the North and the North East of Brazil, and one of the last ports when you go up north through the Coast. And this building was the ADUANA (Immigration Department), now the Goverment decided to open a space for culture and it is a great place for you to learn all the Maranhenses' Tradition of BUMBA MEU BOI and of course, a incredible place for you to see all the attractions of the State such as the other regions of Delta, lençois and the Amazon Forest.

The guide Vanessa will explain to you with rich detailes all the legends and funny stories that created the myst of BUMBA MEU BOI.

Such a tradition comes from the 18th Century, it was a way that the locals had to praise St. John's day telling bushmen legends to all generations referred the relationshipo between the cattle and the men, between men and religion, between many races such as black, indian and white. This simply show to the world that in brazil all races live with peace, love and harmony, and above all with lots of fun!

Here you can see the "seeds of the Earth" Marcone and the very clever Visitor's Guide Vanessa, she is always there to show to you her pride and happiness of being "maranhense"

They are showing us the clowns of BUMBA MEU BOI!

    THE RICH CULTURAL HERITAGE

by RafaelTheSecond Updated Mar 14, 2007

They are in this land way before the date when the first portuguese navigators set foot in these swamp lands of Maranhão, the tribes are not as much as it used to be during the colonization times, but they were the real owners of these paradise called MARANHAO. Tapuias, Tupinambas, Itapecuru and Guripis, the native indians were plenty in that time, most of them so friendly that allowed the French to establish a settlement in the fiftene hundreds. Today they are hidden in the forests where the Amazon starts or ends, but they gave lots of weired name to various location in the State, and they left their culture that today it is reminded in the so incredible BUMBA MEU BOI party in June.

These impressive painting you can find in a cultural centre called CASA DO MARANHAO

This place is there since 2002 to give to the visitor a complete knowledge about the traditions of this rich State, specially the so colourful and interesting dance of BUMBA MEU BOI. The building itself is full of History!

MAGICAL SUNSETS IF THE ISLE OF LOVE

by RafaelTheSecond Updated Mar 14, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

São Luis is also called the Isle of Love, people say that every visitor which comes here will always come back, because one love affair is left here, and it will be always a reason to return. In a way, it is correct, as I am in love with the ISLAND, and I am also in love with a glorious native. This love feeds me with fun, energy and happiness, but in every place close to the sea, specially in the Bay of Sao Marcos, you can watch the sun going down with style!

The scenery becomes simply magnificent!!!! Try to be always close to the old town of Reviver, and when you reach the little port, you will be a witness of the sun making love with the landscape, and the result is THE ORGASM OF SAO LUIS! :)

THE NUMBER ONE FRENCH CITY IN BRAZIL: SÃO LUIS

by RafaelTheSecond Written Nov 17, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The tiles...that is the only way you can tell whether it is a french house or a portuguese house...São Luis was founded by the french in 1612 by the captain Daniel de La Touche...The french tried to invade our coast many times, and they just suceeded in Maranhão. . It seems that they stayed for a short time, but at least they left some style in the city's buildings...when the portuguese came they just enforced their architecture. What just remains french are some tiles and also the very sophisticated sewage system inspired by the same system in Paris during that time in the past!

São luis still preserve its Historic Centre, but many things has to be done to keep this heritage to all brazilians.
