The first day, soon after I arrived on the island (Ilha do Amor), I accidently met a group of Brazilians that we had met before. Two days ago we came from São Paulo to Santarem with the same flight. We started a conversation. It was a dinner time and we decided to eat together. There are several stilted shacks on the beach that serve food and drink. As the place is surounded by rivers fresh fish was the best choice.

Favorite Dish: We had grilled tucunare (peacock bass) and fish cooked in sauce made of tomato, pepper, onion, garlic, coriander and coconut milk. The meal was accompanied by rice, farofa (toasted manioc flour), piquant supplement made of tomato, pepper, onion, coriander and vinegar and limes.

Everything was just delicious... one of the best fish I had in the Amazon!! Yummy :))

Sabor do Açaí: Traditional Nutrition of the Amazon Region

Açaí is a small, round, black-purple berry fruit of the palm native to the area. It's a
major component of the diet of traditional population in the Amazon region in Brazil.

The fruit is frequently used in various juice blends, smoothies, sodas and also as a companion to the fish. In northern Brazil acai is consumed fresh and it's traditionally served in a bowl with tapioca (crunchy pellets made of manioc root, also called pearl tapioca). As such they also serve it in this place, Sabor do Açaí. And believe it or not, I was coming there every day!! Just loved the taste of the creamy dish :))

Açaí has also become a trend in southern Brazil where they use frozen fruit. It is consumed cold as acai na tijela (açaí in the bowl), usually served with granola and banana.
