A picturesque white-sand island Ilha do Amor is a subject of thousand postcards and undoubtedly the most beautiful beach of Alter do Chão.
It's lying in front of the village, surrounded by river Tapajós on one side and lagoon Lago Verde on the other. There are several beach kiosks that offer local fish and drink. In the morning, when the water is low, you can reach it by foot and in the afternoon, when the water is high, there is a boat transfer to the mainland.
The island is largest and most attractive in the dry season, somewhere from June to December. In the wet season it's greatly reduced.
It's by all means a dream-place for beach and nature lovers... and if you are lucky enough you can also see a beautiful sunset!!!
Alter do Chão stands at the entrance to a picturesque lagoon Lago Verde which is worth exploring.
Local operators offer different tours through the lake but you can also rent a canoe or kayak on either beach and do it yourself.
Igarape do Macaco ("igarape" means creek, stream of a river or lake and sometimes it's navigable) is water stream and principal source of Lago Verde. It is surrounded by lush vegetation and it's home to numerous birds.
There are also a couple of rustic but nice beaches where you can safely refresh in a crystal clear water in the middle of the rainforest. There will certainly be nobody but you :)
