unhas de caranguejo (crab claws) by rui_bijie Whenever in Belem try one of the typical dishes: Pato no tucupi: duck in tucupi-sauce (tucupi = juice of the manioc root) Manicoba: stew like Feijoada that takes a week to prepare; instead of the beans, the green leaves of the manioc are ground and cooked at least for 7 days (to neutralize the poison in the leaves) and of course the delicious sea food: Local fish: filhote, dourada, pescada amarela; also try the unhas de caranguejo (crab claws) and casquinha de caranguejo (stuffed crab). Estação das Docas by hmoitta Estação das Docas is a place you should go if you are in Belém, the old harbour which was transformed in a leisure complex. It has regional food and ice_cream, regional beer, tours in the river with local dances , permanent and temporary exhibitions, music concerts, regional gift shops and a wonderful view of the bay. It is closed on Mondays. Leave a Comment

Eat Cairu Ice Cream everyday... I'm not kidding... It's the best Ice Cream in the world, and ever since I left Belem I've thought about it everyday. We would walk for over an hour to get to Cairu, even in the sweltering heat... The best flavors are Tapioca and Mango... So Super.
My fondest memory is the shopping for Hammocks - the first day we went they tried to charge us 30 real, the next day, 20 real, the third day - it was down to 10 real... we took that deal, but later found them cheaper - oh well! Leave a Comment

I rather doubt that anyone has followed us along on our voyage around all of South America and the many stops which we made. On VT, that would be a daunting task indeed. We began this trip in February of 1998, just a month after having beein in CHINA where we began in the city of BEIJING and ended after a month of traipsing around all over the best of CHINA whereupon we took a two week cruise from HONG KONG ending up in SINGAPOREWe then spent another month covering ~ MALAYSIA & THAILAND ~ before returning to our home. BELEM was not a big ticket item for either of us as we, along with most on the ship, were all anticipating one of the principal reasons that many of us had in common, THE AMAZON RIVER and had been talking to one another about it for weeks.
No offense intended to residents of this city, but it just was not high on the agenda for reasons explained. The city is, after all, the economic center of the STATE OF PARA as well, it is the Capital City. It has a very rich and important history.
